    **Position Description:** The McWhorter School of Building Science (BSCI ) at Auburn University seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The candidate should be willing to engage in innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary teaching, research, and/or scholarly outreach and service activities by forming strong relationships with students, faculty, alumni, industry, and other academic and professional institutions.

    The successful candidate is expected to:

    1. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Current areas of teaching need include (but are not limited to) building structures, construction documents, electrical construction, scheduling and field management, construction law, and virtual design and construction.

    2. Develop an active program of scholarly research and/or outreach scholarship in accordance with the school and university mission.

    3. Actively direct undergraduate and graduate student research.

    4. Participate in service activities supporting the school, college, and university mission.

     

    The typicalBSCI tenure-track faculty workload is 70% teaching (equating to 18 credit hours over the 9-month academic year), 25% research and/or outreach, and 5% service; the percentages are negotiated with the School Head annually.     **About the School:** The McWhorter School of Building Science (McWhorter School of Building Science – College of Architecture, Design and Construction (https://cadc.auburn.edu/construction/) ), established in 1947, is the second oldest construction education program in the United States.BSCI maintains a proud tradition of practical and professional construction education, offering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Building Construction. Additionally, faculty teach in Auburn’s collaborative undergraduate minor in Real Estate Development and the Master of Real Estate Development. The school has 26 full-time faculty members and a student population of over 700. It has six named professorships and one endowed chair, all generously supported by alumni. The School has over 4,000 alumni, including many leading the industry in Engineering News-Record’s top-ranked firms.BSCI is an active Associated Schools of Construction (ASC ) member fully accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE ).

     

    The southeastern construction industry andBSCI alumni greatly support the School and its activities. The school receives substantial recurring funds committed to helping its mission to deliver the highest quality construction education. These include a unique Construction Industry Fund, supported by State of Alabama contractors’ licensing fees, significant endowment funds, and funding to directly support domestic and international service learning projects.

     

    BSCI is housed in the dedicated 36,000 sf LEED® Gold-rated M. Miller Gorrie Center (Auburn University College of Architecture, Design and Construction (https://cadc-auburn.college-tour.com/tours-of-facilities/gorrie-center) ) that was the result of industry and alumni generosity and leadership. Additionally,BSCI has the dedicated Robins & Morton Construction Field Lab (Robins & Morton Construction Field Lab – College of Architecture, Design and Construction (https://cadc.auburn.edu/construction/about-construction/construction-facilities/robins-morton-construction-field-lab/) ) for both instructional and research activities, being the first and one of the few schools in the nation with such facilities.

     

    Since 2000, the school has maintained an active study abroad program for undergraduate and graduate students each semester. This program helps our students be aware of construction on a global scale. Approximately 25% of our students gain an international experience before they graduate. Student competitions are also a substantial part of our culture, where our students compete annually in multiple competitions across the U.S. and internationally.

     

    BSCI faculty conduct research in a wide range of areas, including cutting-edge technologies, mass timber, and construction education.     **Salary and Start-Up Resources:** Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and based on a nine-month academic year, plus full benefits (Benefits at Auburn University | Office of Human Resources (https://auburn.edu/administration/human\_resources/benefits/index.php) ). Summer teaching positions may also be available. The candidate will also receive considerable start-up resources for research and conference-related travel, training, computers and software, and research assistant support. A relocation expense stipend will also be provided. Individual financial awards related to teaching and research excellence and program enhancement are also given annually on a competitive basis.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

    + A Master’s degree in Construction, Architecture, Engineering, or a Bachelor’s degree in Construction plus a terminal degree in a related field, at the time employment begins.

    + Appropriate professional employment in the construction industry relevant to the areas of teaching need.

    + Potential to teach undergraduate and/or graduate construction courses.

    + Potential to develop an active construction management-related research/outreach program.

    + Potential to direct undergraduate and graduate student research.

    Desired Qualifications

    Desired qualifications for this position (in addition to the minimum qualifications):

    + Evidence of successful teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate construction courses where high-impact teaching practices were leveraged.

    + An earned doctorate in Construction, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field at time employment begins.

    + Greater than five years of progressive, full-time experience in the U.S. construction industry.

    + Evidence of an active research/outreach program, including publications and presentations in appropriate venues.

    + Evidence of mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research.

    + Advanced education, certifications, professional registration, licensure, or other relevant credentials.
