    General Purpose

     

    We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Grid Modernization Engineer to support the development and deployment of next-generation distribution automation technologies. The ideal candidate will work cross-functionally with engineering, field operations, IT/OT, and planning teams to drive initiatives that improve situational awareness, fault response, and grid resilience. This role is responsible for integrating and optimizing intelligent field devices—including protective relays, cFCI sensors, PMUs.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities of the **Engineer I** position include the following:

    + Support and help design Networking architectures to enable secure, scalable, and resilient grid communication.

    + Implement and maintain IP-based communications infrastructure, including SCADA RTUs, relays, switches, and field routers.

    + Configure and analyze protective relay event data for grid performance, protection coordination, and fault response improvement.

    + Integrate and analyze data from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for distribution-level observability, system dynamics, and event detection.

    + Collaborate with SCADA engineers to enable remote control and telemetry of devices such as field reclosers, sensors, and switches.

    + Develop use cases and validate system behavior under normal, abnormal, and faulted grid conditions.

    + Troubleshoot field communication issues and perform root cause analysis of equipment malfunctions and telemetry failures.

    + Maintain documentation, network diagrams, relay settings records, and integration workflows.

    + Lead the deployment, configuration, and integration of distributed communicating Faulted Circuit Indicators (cFCIs) across the electric distribution network.

    + Contribute to cross-functional project planning and participate in regulatory and stakeholder discussions on advanced grid capabilities.

    + Support the development and validation of analytics for precursor event detection, fault location, and restoration automation.

    In addition to the above, the **Engineer II** responsibilities include:

    + Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, process, or facilities to support Company objectives, utilizing engineering methods.

    + Develop moderately complex electrical engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments.

    + Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.

    + Guide and direct associate level engineers, technicians and drafters.

    + Recommend alternative solutions to management in area of specialty on engineering solutions to meet business needs.

    + Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work.

    + Maintain project timelines and budgets.

    + Analyze and design engineering methods.

    In addition to the above, the **Senior Engineer** responsibilities include:

    • Act as a lead/expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians and drafters.

    Requirements

    Requirements for the **Engineer I** position include the following:

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college/university.

    • Basic knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering specialty.

    • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations (if required for the position).

    • Ability to interact favorably with project and work teams.

    • Communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.

    • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.

    In addition to the above, the **Engineer II** requirements include:

    • A minimum of two or more years of directly related experience in the applicable engineering field.

    • Demonstrated knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering specialty.

    • Understanding of Company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.

    • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and the National Electric Codes (if required for the position).

    • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.

    • Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.

    In addition to the above, the **Senior Engineer** requirements include:

    • A minimum of five or more years’ experience in industrial power systems or electric utility power systems, or related professional experience.

    • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.

    In addition to the above, the **Senior Engineer II** requirements include:

    • A minimum of six or more years’ experience in industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.

    • Advanced technical degree or professional engineer (PE) license preferred or 8 years of directly applicable engineering experience required.

    Preferences

    + experience working in electric utility operations, protection engineering, SCADA, or OT networking.

    + Familiarity with **protective relays** (e.g., SEL, ABB, GE), event record formats, and logic schemes.

    + Experience with **cFCIs** , **PMUs** , or other distributed sensors on utility circuits.

    + Understanding of **SCADA protocols** (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850) and **IP networking** .

    + Experience with **network switches, firewalls** , and/or **SDN concepts** in an OT or substation environment.

    + Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex systems.

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
