    **_The UW Department of Pediatrics_** is dedicated to improving the health of all children by educating physicians of the future, advancing research, advocating for children, and providing the nation's best pediatric clinical care. The Division of Rheumatology within the Department of Pediatrics cares for children with rheumatic diseases, autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases that affect the joints or multiple body systems. The Division is composed of 13 faculty members with a diverse set of research interests and expertise. Dr. Canny is a pediatric rheumatologist with a focus on basic and translational studies of hyperinflammatory syndromes that affect children. She seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic **_Temporary_** **Research Scientist/Engineer 1** with interests in immunology, cellular biology, and an understanding of human disease. The goals of the research program are to understand the role of inflammatory molecules (cytokines and ligands for innate immune sensors) in triggering monocyte responses and shaping T cell responses during hyperinflammatory syndromes. Laboratory work will be conducted under Dr. Canny’s supervision at the Benaroya Research Institute on First Hill.

    Job duties include but are not limited to:

    Bench Research - Engage in laboratory work in support of funded research projects

    o Tissue culture: maintain sterile technique and isolate cells from human blood samples, culture and activate human immune cells.

    o Basic molecular biology techniques: nucleic acid isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative PCR.

    o Immunology techniques: flow cytometry, ELISA and other established techniques.

     

    Sample handling and management - Researcher will ensure that samples are inventoried and stored properly.

     

    o Sample intake and processing: Label, track, process (isolate DNA or RNA, plasma or serum, cells) and store human samples (blood, cells, plasma/serum, DNA, RNA, cell lines, tissue) in compliance with human subject research regulations.

     

    General research support - Researcher will help with overall operations of the laboratory as assigned by the lab manager or PI.

     

    o Perform other research duties as required such as: protocol implementation and trouble shooting.

    o Data Presentation: summarize research results in presentations for lab meetings as well as for use in public presentations and publications.

    o Maintain appropriate research documentation and databases.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Cellular or Molecular Biology, or related field.

    • 2-4 Months applicable work experience.

    • Coursework or equivalent research experience in immunology.

    • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

    • Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

    • Demonstrated practical experience and proficiency in basic molecular biology procedures including spectrophotometry for measuring nucleic acid concentration, PCR primer design, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, RNA isolation.

    • Experience handling human blood samples and cells or extensive experience with mammalian cell culture.

    • Knowledge of and/or experience with flow cytometry and other immunology techniques.

    • Ability to communicate experimental results clearly using strong computer skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Experience with flow cytometry including sample preparation and analysis.

    • Knowledge of CRISPR-Cas9 editing.

    • Familiarity with coding using R.

    • Experience isolating immune cells from blood.

    • Comfort with extracting and handling RNA.

     

    The employee will receive training in human subjects’ research and will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and maintain confidentiality of patient privacy rights, employee information, Department of Pediatrics strategic plans and initiatives, financial information or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize employee rights, the organization’s operations or privacy of patients. They will access and use the minimum necessary information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $20.76 hourly

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $350.00 hourly
