Responsibilities Apply safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. Develop or implement programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses. Inspect or survey workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and identify potential new hazards. Train workers, supervisors, manager, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational subjects. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment, if required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/15/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: 1) Assisting in safety inspections of work sites, work operation, work conditions, and equipment maintenance; 2) Ensuring compliance with occupational safety and health regulations and hazard procedures; 3) Utilizing electronic databases (i.e. Safety Management Information System (SMIS)) to assist in managing safety and occupational health programs. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education in Safety or Occupational Health fields (Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene) or a degree in another field of study, that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following ( or closely related) disciplines: Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Medicine, Toxicology, Public Health, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Industrial Psychology, that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled. (Must include transcripts) (1) Class standing--Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Administration, based on completed courses. Time in Grade: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service); with few exceptions as outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). However, performance of inspections and investigations of mishaps requires frequent physical exertion such as frequent walking and hiking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces, crouching, climbing, stooping, climbing ladders, working on roofs, crawling under buildings and in attics, etc. There may be need for the incumbent to lift and carry moderately heavy objects. The use of personal protective equipment (hard hat, steel-toed boots, gloves, eye goggles, and respirators) may be required due to exposure to hazardous occupational environments. Working Conditions: Although most work is performed in an office, on-site inspections involve exposure to hazardous chemicals, moving equipment, heights, closed spaces, high noise levels, temperature extremes, fumes and smoke.
