Schedule:
Friday Programming: September - May, 10-15 hours per week
Winter Break Camp: December 2025, 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday
Spring Break Camp: March 2026, 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday
Summer Break Camp: June - August 2026, 40 hours a week, Monday -Friday
Description:
Hands-On History leader will facilitate educational programming for children ranging in age from 6-12 (1st-5th grade) in a day camp setting. This facilitation will focus on Colorado history and cover various topics, including archaeology, cultural diversity, social justice, resource management, and environmental stewardship.
Hands-On History (https://www.historycolorado.org/handsonhistory) is a collection of engaging and exciting education programs. They provide participatory history and culture-based offerings for students from grades 1 to 5 (ages 6 to 12) when school classes aren’t in session. Offered at multiple locations across Colorado throughout the calendar year, each program’s curriculum focuses on hands-on, experiential-style explorations and offers interactive classes with themes and topics specifically tailored to each community.
Essential Duties:
+ Facilitate educational programming that engages students with the past in interdisciplinary ways.
+ Assist the Hands-On History ProgramCoordinator in facilitating educational programs and supervising groups of children.
+ Learn the Hands-On History curriculum and perform tasks delegated by the Hands-On History Program Coordinator.
+ Serve as an additional contact point for parents seeking information about program activities as well as the successes or concerns of their children.
+ Follow and enforce program expectations and rules while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
+ Collaborate with staff to ensure students are actively engaged and accounted for.
+ Regularly communicate with the Hands-On History Program Coordinator to address the concerns of staff, campers, and families.
+ Perform regular cleaning of the spaces used for Hands-On History programs/activities and ensure materials and supplies are properly stored and cared for.
+ Exercise appropriate decision-making and ensure all incidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions are reported to your supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Must complete 15 hours of training (in-person & online), including first aid/CPR, mandated reporter, etc., the week before camp begins.
Must be at least 18 years or older and have three (3) months of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children from diverse backgrounds with various skill and ability levels.
Excellent organizational, conflict management, and communication skills.
Occasional physical demands include lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds, as well as frequent bending, reaching, and squatting.
Museum experience or completed courses in museum studies, education, history, or related fields preferred.
Additional conditions of employment include successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting .
An ideal candidate:
Is passionate about history and education. Has good communication skills and enjoys conversing with and facilitating learning for students. Is reliable, responsible, and a self-starter. Is comfortable relating to a wide variety of audiences and is up for new challenges.
This position is great for college students or educators on school breaks. Spanish speaker is a plus (but not required).
