    Job Summary

    The Engineering Technician supports the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Lab (MSEL) through a wide range of technical and fabrication functions.

     

    This cross-functional role combines academic maker space support with hands-on work in design, machining, testing, maintenance, and assembly of specialized equipment.

     

    The position requires proficiency with technical standards and specifications, as well as direct engagement in a laboratory environment.

     

    The successful candidate will lead project initiatives, provide expertise and guidance to students and faculty, and foster a collaborative, safety-focused culture. Reporting to the Director of MSEL, the technician will play a critical role in supporting both instructional activities and faculty research.

    Responsibilities*

    + Train faculty, staff, and students- formally and informally- on the safe and effective use of shop equipment.

    + Develop and maintain training curriculum and materials for equipment use, safety procedures, and fabrication best practices.

    + Mentor Senior Design, Student Competition, and E-100 teams on design fundamentals and best practices.

    + This position requires the ability to coordinate with team members, other technical staff, vendors and college constituencies (students, faculty and staff) to effectively meet service design/implementation requests, resolve incidents/requests, and to make continuous improvements to meet operational needs.

    + Purchase and manage shop supplies, tools, and project materials to support instructional and research activities.

    + Provide primary machining and fabrication support for research and instructional projects.

    + Apply technical standards, specifications, and procedures to ensure high-quality, reliable testing.

    + Maintain tools, lab space, and test equipment in safe, clean, and operational condition.

    + Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to support experimental and product development work.

    + Support CECS student competition team operations (e.g. the SAE Formula Electric team).

    + Troubleshoot and repair equipment and systems as needed.

    + Assist as needed with equipment installation, shipping/receiving, and CECS special events.

    + Promote and uphold a strong culture of safety.

    + Foster an inclusive and welcoming work environment for students, staff, and faculty.

    + Contribute to the overall success of the college by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor?s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.

    + 2?4 years of technical or engineering support experience.

    + 3?5 years of machining and fabrication experience.

    + Strong knowledge of technical testing procedures, tools, and standards.

    + Skilled in assembling and testing mechanical systems.

    + Excellent documentation and reporting abilities.

    + Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in teams.

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Primarily lab or manufacturing environment.

     

    May require lifting equipment or tools up to 50 lbs .

     

    Occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends to meet project deadlines.

     

    At times, the technician will be the only staff member on site and responsible for managing the space independently during their shift.

     

    On-campus position with limited remote work flexibility as workload and operational needs allow.
