Position Summary:
The Radio News Director is responsible for coordinating the coverage and reporting of major campus and community news stories. This position is governed by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) regulations, state and federal laws, and institution policy.
Duties & Responsibilities:
+ Generate creative story ideas and concepts; conduct necessary research and gather data and information for local and regional stories
+ Write and produce live and recorded local and regional news stories and features on diverse topics, for broadcast as well as online platforms
+ Provide leadership and direction for other news staff and student interns in the development of daily news policy and practices for on-air and online dissemination of news
+ Establish policies for news coverage of elections, special events, emergency and disaster coverage, and production of news features
+ Assist with content management of KASU’s social media sites
+ Maintain the master log of local/regional news coverage, filing the FCC-required quarterly News & Issues reports in KASU’s Public File
+ Mentor and train student interns and student staff members from the ASU School of Media & Journalism, as assigned
+ Assist with station fundraising activities; appear at KASU special events for members, underwriters and other constituents as directed by the station manager
+ Other duties as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of news reporting techniques and procedures
Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures
Knowledge of station operations and procedures
Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission rules and regulations relating to radio broadcasting
Knowledge of news editing techniques
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate news broadcasts and format
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates
Ability to evaluate radio news operations
Ability to operate radio station broadcast equipment
General Days/Hours:
Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Additional hours as requested and/or needed

Preferred: general knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, journalistic principles and practices, interviewing and reporting skills, web and digital media skills, judgement and critical thinking skills
Minimum Qualifications:
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, or a related field
Two (2) years of experience in broadcasting or a related area
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the qualifications review committee
