Duties Description Under the general direction of the OCA Counsel, the duties of the Deputy Counsel for Litigation include, but are not limited to: (1) Overseeing and coordinating all litigation matters involving the UCS and its employees. (2) Serving as the primary liaison with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on litigation matters, including ensuring that the OAG is advised in a timely manner when cases are filed where the OAG will be providing representation, and ensuring proper oversight and handling of those cases.(3) Supervising OCA Counsel’s Office attorneys handling litigation and administrative proceedings, including assigning cases, reviewing work product and monitoring performance.(4) Serving as counsel and appearing in cases when needed.(5) Conducting legal research and providing legal advice and guidance to UCS personnel on litigation and other issues.(6) Ensuring that UCS Leadership is kept apprised of developments in significant litigation matters.(7) Serving on various internal UCS committees and working groups.(8) Undertaking other tasks as assigned. Candidates should have substantial experience in handling and overseeing litigation, strong leadership qualities, demonstrated success working with management and other governmental entities, strong written and oral skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.Deputy Counsel have formal responsibility for a specific function or field of law which relates to the development and implementation of court policies and/or the administration of the Unified Court System (UCS). Deputy Counsel work under the general direction of the Counsel to the Office of Court Administration (OCA), and are significantly involved in assisting in the overall management of Counsel's Office. Deputy Counsel analyze and advise court administrators on legal issues and questions presented by administrative rules, legislation and litigation that are complex and specialized, and/or that have serious implications for court administration and operations. They also perform other related duties.
Minimum Qualifications Admission to the New York State Bar and a minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience. Candidates with substantial New York State and federal litigation experience, as well as candidates with supervisory experience, are encouraged to apply.
