    Overview

     

    The Traffic Services Laborer position performs a variety of traffic and shop maintenance functions for the Public Works & Mobility Department. This position performs a wide range of duties to keep our streets safe and compliant with MUTCD standards, including the layout, installation, inspection, and repair of traffic signs and pavement markings. Work involves operating specialized equipment, maintaining traffic control devices, ensuring safe work sites, performing sidewalk hazard maintenance, and supporting snow and ice removal. The role also includes deploying traffic data collection equipment, preparing reports, and assisting with general shop and yard upkeep.

     

    Hourly Entry Rate: $37.23. The employer agrees to make pension contributions in lieu of wages to the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust Fund PEER84, subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.     Job Status: Seasonal, Full-Time; Union Affiliated Position - Teamsters Union Local No.2

    Essential Functions

    + Perform a variety of traffic maintenance functions to ensure compliance with MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) regulations, including the layout and installation of pavement markings, the fabrication and installation of road/traffic signs.

    + Inspect and maintain existing traffic control devices (e.g., signs, markings, lane stripes, etc.) to maintain high visibility and ensure compliance with MUTCD regulations.

    + Maintain and repair traffic striping and sign installation equipment.

    + Ensure safety of worksites in or near roadways, utilizing cones, barricades, warning signs, and trucks to direct and control the flow of traffic and mitigate risks of accidents, injury, or damage.

    + Perform sidewalk hazard maintenance, including grinding sidewalks, snow and ice removal, etc.

    + Operate various tools, vehicles, and equipment, including shovels, plows, snow blowers, ATV’s, skid loaders, paint sprayers, jack hammers, concrete milling machines, etc.

    + Deploy traffic data collection equipment.

    + Prepare various statistical reports.

    + Maintain the cleanliness of the maintenance shop and yard.

    + Perform other duties, as assigned.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of maintenance and construction operations, including various maintenance and construction equipment, working with paint, concrete, and other various materials.

    + Knowledge of traffic zone procedures.

    + Knowledge of, or the ability to learn and apply, MUTD regulations and other federal, state, and local protocols.

    + Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, including risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage, and liability.

    + Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.

    + Skill in maintenance and repair of various construction equipment.

    + Skill in implementing operational and maintenance plans.

    + Skill in safely operating various tools, vehicles, and other equipment.

    + Skill in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and timeline demands.

    + Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.

    + Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

    + Ability to learn job-specific functions, tools, and equipment, including sign installation, traffic marking road layouts, etc.

    + Ability to prepare various reports and statistical data.

    + Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific area of focus and/or assigned projects.

    + Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling the confidential and sensitive information.

    + Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

    + Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

    + Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.

    Working Conditions:

    + Position requires the ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. or less.

    + Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions, occupational hazards, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including loud noises or high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.

    + Position may require on-call, standby, and/or overtime hours, as needed.

     

    Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

     

    + Any combination of education and experience equivalent to one (1) year of maintenance, construction experience, or another relevant field.

    + Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

    + Must have Flagger Safety certification, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

    + Must have Work Zone Technician certification, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
