Job Summary
The University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education is searching for a Director of Budget & Financial Planning. This position will report to and work closely with the Chief of Staff & Strategic Advisor to the Dean, and will oversee the financial administration and internal control activities for the school. It serves as the leader of Marsal's Budget & Financial Planning team, supporting faculty, staff, and students in carrying out Marsal's education and research objectives. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to organize a team that delivers a high level of customer service while maintaining efficient and high-quality financial management in a complex, fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities*
1. Administer the business affairs of the Marsal Family School of Education.
2. Lead the development and implementation of Marsal's operating budget.
3. Provide timely and comprehensive financial reports and analysis of financial trends in order to assist the school's leadership in making decisions and allocating resources.
4. Develop and maintain a high-performing team responsible for the overall financial administrative support for Marsal in the areas of procurement, finance, general accounting, and internal controls. Establish and maintain accounting structures that support Marsal's financial management objectives. Review business transactions for compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
5. Monitor school compliance with internal controls procedures. Assist in preparing recommendations for school-wide policies, procedures, controls and actions.
6. Promote a customer service approach to problem-solving that is centered on the core mission of the school. Build collaborative working relationships with Marsal faculty, staff, and operational department managers to enhance the quality and efficiency of business operations in the school. Communicate policies and procedures regarding all aspects of finance and internal controls to the school.
7. Work directly with University's central administration departments to resolve issues related to finance administration. Maintain knowledge and understanding of University of Michigan systems by participating in committees that enhance and improve work processes.
8. Represent Marsal financial management in meetings with other schools and colleges. Act as the school's Financial Unit Liaison and SSC Unit Liaison.
9. Maintain careful organizational records, including working documents, shared files, and financial records.
Required Qualifications*
Financial Manager Lead requirements include all requirements at the Senior level as well as the following:
+ 8+ years of experience in a financial role
+ Experience leading the day-to-day financial operations, and developing and managing budgets for an organization
+ Experience supervising a team of professional staff
Financial Senior Manager requirements:
+ 5+ years of experience in a finance role
+ Bachelor's degree in business, accounting or a related field
+ Experience developing and managing budgets.
+ Personal initiative and willingness to work independently
+ Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills
+ Strong analytical skills and expertise with Microsoft Excel.
+ Work effectively within a large academic, fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable environment.
+ The successful candidate is friendly, adaptable, and adept at solving complex problems, consistently delivering excellent service to a wide range of constituents.
Desired Qualifications*
+ Knowledge of University of Michigan financial and reporting systems, policies, and operations is strongly preferred but not required.
+ An M.B.A., M.P.A, or similar degree is strongly preferred.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. This position requires a minimum of 3 days per week on-site at the Marsal Family School of Education, 610 E. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109.

Openings may be filled at either the Financial Manager Lead or Financial Senior Manager level, depending on alignment with the position, as well as the candidate's experience and qualifications.
