    Job Duties – Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:

    Road and Surface/Roadside Maintenance

    + Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides, installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.

    + Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.

    + Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and traveling public.

    + Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside – planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal.Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.

    Snow & Ice

    + Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slipper conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.

    + Prepares and inspects winter equipment – maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.

    + Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps and roadways.

    + Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

    Minimum Qualifications

    A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.

    **Part 1:** The experience needed to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

    + One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).

    OR

    + Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.(In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

    AND

    + Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

    **Part 2:** Candidates that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. Acceptance of an offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test. Candidates that have previously taken and passed the math and reading assessment may be exempt from re-testing. Please check with your district HR office.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Previous MnDOT experience working as a laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.

    This position requires successful completion of the following:

    Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history checks. It is our policy that all candidates submit to a background investigation prior to employment.

    + Education/License Verification

    + Driver's License Check

     

    This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver’s License, submits to a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and is registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
