Position Summary:
The Transform Lab in the Department of Chemistry is seeking a postdoctoral fellow. The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research on the fate and transformation of organic contaminants in aquatic environments, with a focus on Lake Okeechobee. This includes studying the spatial and temporal variations in concentrations and profiles of pesticides, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. The research will explore phototransformation mechanisms of emerging organic contaminants and the formation processes of photodegradation byproducts.
Responsibilities include:
+ Conducting fieldwork, including sample collection and deployment of passive samplers in Lake Okeechobee, in collaboration with the local management company.
+ Handling and processing aquatic samples, including preserving the samples and extracting organic contaminants.
+ Performing analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) to identify the degradation processes.
+ Designing and executing experiments on the photodegradation of organic contaminants.
+ Mentoring graduate students involved in related research activities.
+ Writing and publishing the research papers.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A Ph.D. in environmental chemistry or a related field such as geochemistry, environmental engineering, or biochemistry.
2. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in the fate and transport of organic contaminants.
3. Experience with GC-MS and/or GC-IRMS is preferred but not required.
4. A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within one month of starting the position.

$55,000.00 - $62,000.00
