Your role at Clorox:
The Clorox Company is seeking an Analytical Chemistry Expert (Scientist II) to join our Advanced Measurement Sciences (AMS) – Analytical Group at our R&D Center in Pleasanton, CA. In this role, you will provide chemical expertise to support product innovation, claims validation, and manufacturing excellence across Clorox’s portfolio of consumer goods.
You will conduct product and material characterization, method development, and data analysis, and collaborate with scientists and business partners to troubleshoot issues, validate results, and contribute to departmental initiatives. Experience with EPA/FDA regulated OTC products and chemical analysis of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products in categories such as cleaning, personal care, water filtration, charcoal, and cat litter is highly desired.

In this role, you will:
+ **Analytical Separation Science:** Proficiency with analytical instrumentation and methodologies, including sample preparation and chromatography systems (LC, GC, IC). Familiarity with detectors such as UV/VIS, ELSD, FID, and MS, and associated software for analyte identification, purity assessment, and quantification.
+ **Method Development and Optimization:** Ability to design, execute, and refine analytical methods to assess compound solubility, stability, recovery, sensitivity, resolution, accuracy, precision, and throughput. Hands-on experience with HPLC, LC-MS, LC-QTOF-MS, GC, GC-MS, and GC-QTOF-MS for analyzing ingredients, impurities, and degradation products across consumer goods sectors, including household cleaners, personal care, cosmetics, food, charcoal, litter, and water purification products.
+ **Instrumentation Maintenance and Troubleshooting:** Experience maintaining and troubleshooting HPLC, LC-MS, LC-QTOF-MS, GC, GC-MS, and GC-QTOF-MS instruments. Familiarity with Agilent and ABSciex hardware and software is preferred.
+ Elemental Analysis: Skilled in elemental characterization using ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and XRF, with strong wet chemistry techniques such as pH measurement and titration.
+ **Spectroscopic Techniques:** Working knowledge of UV/VIS, FTIR, fluorescence, EDX, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy.
+ **Chemical Analysis Expertise:** Experience analyzing inorganic compounds (metals, acid-base, redox species) and organic compounds (surfactants, antimicrobials, antioxidants, volatile compounds, carbohydrates, natural products). Proficient in sample preparation, extraction, enrichment, data analysis, interpretation, and documentation.
+ **Data Analytics and Experimental Design:** Competence in data management, statistical analysis, experimental design, modeling, trend analysis, and implementing corrective actions for assay and product optimization or troubleshooting.
+ **Method Validation and Transfer:** Experience validating and transferring analytical methods to R&D, CROs, and QA/QC laboratories. Oversight of CRO analytical activities and familiarity with regulated laboratory environments (GLP, GMP) and EPA/FDA submissions.
+ **Innovation and Capability Building:** Ability to identify and advocate for emerging analytical technologies to enhance or complement industry-standard methodologies and meet evolving business needs.
+ **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Proven ability to work effectively with project teams, regulatory affairs, and legal departments to define analytical testing requirements for product development, troubleshooting, claims substantiation, labeling, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.

What we look for:
+ B.S., M.Sc., or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
+ 3+ years of expereience in a technical leadership role within an analytical chemistry laboratory, ideally in consumer-packaged goods, food, chemicals, crop protection, pharmaceuticals, or a contract research organization.
+ Serve as the primary technical contact for chromatography/separations requests and provide expert guidance on all aspects of analytical chemistry to scientists and management.
+ Lead and actively participate in accurate and robust analyses of actives and inserts for all product types and prototypes across Clorox business units.

+ Manage chemicals and operate/maintain instruments and software with peak performance and safety. Optimize analytical methodologies, upgrade equipment, and recommend new analytical tools as needed.
+ Conduct laboratory investigations for anomalous results, identify solutions, and oversee analyses performed at CROs.
+ Train technical staff and develop training programs to build team capabilities.
+ Design and execute experiments, processing analytical data using instrument software, DOE tools, and other statistical applications.
+ Support general lab management, maintaining a safe, clean, and organized workspace, and ordering supplies as needed.

We use broad salary ranges that reflect the competitive market for similar jobs, provide sufficient opportunity for growth as you gain experience and expand responsibilities, while also allowing for differentiation based on performance. Based on the breadth of our ranges, most new hires will start at Clorox in the first half of the applicable range. Your starting pay will depend on job-related factors, including relevant skills, knowledge, experience and location. The applicable salary range for every role in the U.S. is based on your work location and is aligned to one of three zones according to the cost of labor in your area.
•Zone A: $88,700 - $165,900
•Zone B: $81,300 - $152,100
•Zone C: $73,900 - $138,300
