Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Industrial Department, Drydock/Shipwright Shop in Baltimore, MD. Responsibilities You will be responsible for assisting journeymen Shipwrights or workers with tasks that involve the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine crafts and vessels. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include: Using power and hand tools common to the Shipwright trade. Getting tools and supplies, carrying materials and lifting and holding items in place while the Shipwright is working on them. Cleaning work area, tools and machines. Assisting in positioning, building up and securing to the drydock floor, keel blocks, bilge blocks, and other structures upon which the vessel will rest when the dock is raised or the vessel is hauled on the marine railway. Standing drydock security watch on a rotational basis. Making hourly rounds of the docks to insure that the docks are operating properly. Measuring and logging the freeboard on each dock and inspecting all compartments on the #2 dock three times during each watch to insure that no ruptures exist, which would damage the dock machinery. Requirements Conditions of Employment All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Key Requirements: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service. U.S. Citizenship is required. Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc (includes blueprint reading) 6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment 7. Knowledge of material National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
