    Department Summary:

    Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services (SAAS) is a student-centered unit within the Division of Student Life whose work is guided by best-practice standards and interventions utilizing a multidimensional model of student well-being. SAAS oversees four key resources: Academic Support and Access Partnerships (ASAP), Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), Adaptive Sports & Fitness (ASF), and Testing Accommodation Centers, and is committed to promoting accessibility by providing support services, advocacy, and academic accommodations to students with disabilities. SAAS is strongly committed to outreach services to the academic community at large, promoting awareness of disability issues and providing support for equal access for all students. SAAS is a partner to students, faculty, and staff in the pursuit of developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

    Position Summary:

    Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Disability Access Coordinators are responsible for supporting the University of Michigan's commitment to an accessible and inclusive environment by engaging in the interactive process to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations for students with medical, physical, or mental conditions who encounter barriers to their University of Michigan experience. This role also evaluates student requests, reviews third-party documentation, and engages in an individualized determination process to review the barriers creating disability to determine appropriate accommodations. This person will regularly consult with University of Michigan staff and faculty on disability-related issues and serve as the first contact for the coordinator team.

    Responsibilities*

    Accommodations Review and Determination (60%)

    + Exercise professional judgment and specialized knowledge to carry out an individualized determination process for students with physical, sensory, medical, and/or mental conditions, in a timely fashion.

    + Responsible for receiving, storing, and reviewing all relevant third-party documentation to determine reasonable accommodations.

    + Ensure students will receive all legally mandated, appropriate, and renewable academic accommodations.

    + Implementation of accommodations through communication with students, faculty, and staff.

    + Collaborate with the entire SSD coordinator team to support students.

    + Maintain a working knowledge of current disability-related civil rights laws applicable in higher education through ongoing staff collaboration and professional development to ensure institutional compliance with all state/federal mandates pertaining to non-discriminatory and equal access of students with disabilities.

    Student Advocacy and Support (30%)

    + Provide ongoing monitoring and collaborate with the student, staff, faculty, and administrators to ensure effective and timely implementation and delivery of approved reasonable accommodations, with active participation in problem-solving processes should difficulties or unexpected circumstances arise between various constituents.

    + Support students with disabilities by assisting in the identification and referral of on-campus and community resources, development of self-advocacy skills, and assisting in more effectively navigating the diverse and complex campus environment.

    Service to Student Life and the University/Outreach (10%)

    + Actively represent the SSD office in activities within the Division of Student Life and provide expertise and leadership to University constituents regarding best practice policies and procedures.

    + Engage in outreach activities on a University, community, and nationwide level through participation in local, state, and national disability conventions.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree

    + A minimum of 2 years working in disability services

    + A minimum of 1 years experience supporting students.

    + Familiarity with disability law and its application to students with disabilities at the post-secondary level

    + Direct experience and knowledge of standardized intelligence and achievement testing

    Additional Information

    Working Conditions:

    + This position is primarily conducted in an office environment. May be required to travel to various locations on/off campus to conduct business, and will be required to maintain their own high-speed residential connectivity service in order to work from home.
