    Job Description

    What we want

     

    The Research Associate is responsible for preparing materials and supplies needed to carry out specific aims of the research protocol developed by the Directors of the Center for Translational Research in Aging & Longevity. Will coordinate sample management and analytical chemistry sample analysis within a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory. Will work on ongoing translational research investigating nutrition, exercise, and metabolism in relation to aging and the common diseases of our aging population. The focus is on investigating the role of certain macronutrients, the small molecules that make up the building blocks of the proteins, fats and sugars in metabolism.

     

    What you need to know

     

    Salary: $45,000

    Other Requirements: May have to work on the weekend and/or after normal hours. May travel as required. This position is grant funded which is renewed under the provisions of the grantor of the agreement.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience

    + Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

    + Two years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research

    Required Licenses and Certifications

    + May vary depending on the area of research.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Master’s in (bio)chemistry

    + Experience in a biosafety level 2 laboratory

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    + Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment

    + Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software

    + Attention to detail

    + Excellent math skills

    + High level of organizational skills

    + Good background in standard chemical-analytical laboratory techniques including:

    + preparation of sample batches

    + making standard solutions

    + routine equipment maintenance

    + run MS analyses

    + reporting results and quality control

    + Comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and international environment

    Responsibilities

    Research

    + Conducts and coordinates experiments in support of various research projects

    + Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques of routine research, keeping detailed records of data

    + Installs, operates, and/or repairs research equipment

    + Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results

    + Evaluates and summarizes experiment results

    Laboratory Maintenance

    + Sample (storage) management

    + Equipment calibration and maintenance

    + Waste management

    + Ordering supplies

    Writing Reports/Manuscripts

    + Create and/or revise standard operating procedures

    + Utilizes summarized results in scientific and/or clientele-oriented publications

    + Prepares and writes proposals/reports to funding agencies related to research projects

    + Multiplexed immunoassay system milliplex analyser, Luminex xMAP technology), with microplate washer (BioTek, 405 TS)

    + Epoch 2 Microplate Spectrophotometer (Agilent BioTek, Winooski VT)

    + AFS-8D Milli-Q analytical water purifier (Millipore)

    + Instrument-gas (nitrogen, zero-air) generators (PEAK Scientific) supplied by a 30 hp air compressor system (Powerex) with dual coalescing dryers and an 80 G storage tank
