The Department of Marine Engineering Technology (MARE) in the College of Marine Sciences & Maritime Studies at Texas A&M University, located at the Galveston Campus, invites applications for a full-time faculty position beginning fall 2026 or earlier. We are seeking a passionate and experienced marine engineering professional to join us as an Assistant Professor of the Practice—a non-tenure track, 9-month academic appointment with the exciting opportunity to also participate in our 3-month summer sea term aboard our maritime academy training vessel. This is a separate 3-month summer academic appointment to provide hands-on engineering training aboard the training vessel.

The successful candidate will conduct face-to-face and online teaching in undergraduate courses and provide professional service in Marine and/or Mechanical Engineering. The candidate will be expected to teach introduction to marine engineering, auxiliary systems, diesel/ steam/gas turbine propulsion, and develop new courses in emerging technologies, decarbonization, and alternative energy. The candidate’s expertise will be in one or more of the following thematic areas: marine propulsion, green and sustainable shipping, decarbonization, naval architecture, blue energy, and marine alternative fuels.

Our goal is to produce highly skilled graduates with a strong background in engineering fundamentals, mathematics, and analytical methods, which is reinforced by practical machine shop, welding, and laboratory experiences (including several on the training ship). The curriculum builds on a foundation of essential engineering topics such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity, drafting, and materials science to develop interdisciplinary skills required for the practice of marine engineering.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s degree in marine and/or mechanical engineering or closely related fields.

+ Operational experience in the marine and maritime industry.

+ U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer License or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master's degree in marine and/or mechanical engineering.

+ U .S. Coast Guard First Assistant or Chief Engineer’s license valid for service on United States Flagged Commercial Ships.

+ Valid Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 2010 Certificate.

+ Teaching experience in higher education.
