    Position Details

    General Statement

    The DuBois Lab is looking for a qualified biochemistry professional/postdoctoral fellow in an established and productive research lab. The individual filling this position will carry out biochemical research in one of two project areas. First, we are seeking to characterize the interplay of human and microbiome metabolisms at the molecular level. We are specifically interested in understanding the biochemistry of iron metabolism by the types of bacteria that live symbiotically within the human GI tract. Experimental work may include the cultivation and phenotypic characterization of bacterial strains, or molecular studies involving expression, purification, and characterization of proteins, activity assays, and biophysical studies of the purified enzymes and metabolites, depending on the project defined for the applicant. Bacterial cultivation in fermenters, chemostats, or anaerobic chambers may be relevant.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Primary Duties:

    + Performing biochemical experimentation in the lab on a daily basis

    + Data analysis and interpretation

    + Keeping appropriate records of data

    + Writing reports and papers, including the creation of publication quality figures

    + Training and supporting new researchers in the lab

    Secondary Duties:

    + Managing purchasing, receiving, and inventorying, including keeping track of expenses

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + B.S, M.S., or PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or related field plus a minimum of one year of research experience.

    + Experience with one or more of the following: genetic cloning, protein expression, purification and characterization, mass spectrometry, NMR .

    + Experience with and/or demonstrated ability to learn software used with plotting and analyzing data.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Experience with cultivation of and physiological measurements involving bacterial cells under different conditions

    + Experience with protein expression and purification, and associated manipulation of DNA sequences

    + Spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques such as UV-vis, EPR , HPLC , FPLC . Atomic Absorption, Mass Spectrometry, NMR . Use of these techniques to quantitatively analyze biochemical samples.

    + Familiarity with kinetics measurements and/or biochemical catalysis.

     

    Manuscript writing and figure preparation experience.

    + Have good interpersonal, organizational, communication and computer skills.

    + Have the ability to work independently and with others as well as an aptitude for establishing and maintaining constructive working relationships with a wide spectrum of laboratory personnel in a collaborative environment, while representing MSU in a professional manner.

    + The ability to maintain excellent records, pay attention to detail, meet deadlines, prioritize multiple projects, present research results in front of colleagues.
