    Assistant Program Safety Officer - Dive Operations

     

    Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science at the University of Miami is seeking an Assistant Program Safety Officer to provide assistance in all aspects of dive operations. The successful candidate will oversee and enforce dive safety policies, following applicable guidelines and regulations, to ensure diver safety. Moreover, this position supports instructors and teaching assistants with diver training courses.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    + Assists in supervising UM diver evaluation and training including coordinating and conducting scientific diver instruction and certification, diving safety and rescue training, diving accident management, and specialty diving courses for faculty, staff, and students.

    + Must possess the skills necessary to repair and maintain the scientific diving program's inventory including regulators, tanks, compressors, and specialty equipment. They must also be proficient in troubleshooting and field repair of this equipment.

    + Will conduct water evaluations (i.e. administer swimming tests and open water checkout dives) for new and existing UM divers.

    + Aid in supervising research diving operations locally and at sea.

    + Assist in maintaining/operating air fill station and compressor for scuba cylinder filling,

    + Ensure safe operation of all dive equipment used by UM divers.

    + Assist in maintaining all functions of the UM Dive Safety Office.

    + Will have and gain experience with a variety of scientific methodologies from a variety of scientific disciplines.

    + Will assist the SDO in evaluating divers, dive plans, diving conditions, sites, appropriate equipment/ methods and a range of variables for each project and dive to be conducted.

    + Provides UM scientists direction and assistance for field operations, operational support during shipboard and land based diving, project preparations and planning, emergency and contingency planning, and on-site evaluation, supervision, and management.

    + Will assist the SDO in proper record keeping of diver's files, equipment inventory, maintenance records, evaluation/purchasing of equipment, and annual diving statistics.

    + Must be proficient and trained in the instruction of the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) for UM students.

    WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    + 2 year of experience with a University research diving or equivalent program

    + Recreational Open Water Instructor certification

    + Scientific Diver training and be a current scientific diver

    + Experience as a recreational SCUBA instructor (i.e. having taught or assisted in at least 2 dive courses; a minimum of 150 logged open water dives)

    + Must have training in/as CPR, DAN Oxygen Instructor

    + Experience as a Nitrox Instructor and fill station operator preferred

    + Valid/current Florida Drivers’ license

    + Experience working with Microsoft Office

    + Recreational Open Water Instructor certification

    + Scientific Diver training and be a current scientific diver

    + Desired to have:

    + First Aid/CPR instructor

    + Oxygen Provider instructor

    + Neurological Exam instructor

    + SCUBA tank visual inspector

    + SCUBA equipment repair technician
