The State of Connecticut (https://portal.ct.gov/) , Department of Developmental Services (DDS (https://portal.ct.gov/search-results/?q=dds#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=dds&gsc.page=1) ) is seeking a Qualified Craft Worker (Electrical) (https://www.jobapscloud.com/CT/specs/classspecdisplay.asp?ClassNumber=6822TC&R1=undefined&R3=undefined) position responsible for the Norwalk Regional facility, which includes on 4 campus homes, administrative building and 5 outside homes as well as the Ella Grasso Center in Stratford. This position is essential to maintaining state owned properties and insuring compliance with fire and safety codes at these locations.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

+ LOCATION: Norwalk, CT and travel to Stratford, CT

+ SHIFT: First | Full Time (Office/On-site)

+ SCHEDULE: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (however, must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency).

IN THIS ROLE, DISCOVER THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

+ Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with national and local codes and standard trade practices;

+ Lay out and install electrical conduit for power and lighting;

+ Make repairs to electrical motors, controllers, switchboard panels, traffic lights, lights, power circuits, ventilating fans, electrical counting and traffic control devices, intercommunication systems and electrical generators;

+ Install open and concealed wiring and lighting fixtures;

+ Maintain and repair unit heaters, fans, building maintenance machines and equipment, gas pumps, refrigeration units, diesel electric generators, movable bridges, fire alarm systems, etc;

+ Repair relays and switches;

+ Replace motors;

+ Bend pipes;

+ Install, repair and maintain oil burners;

+ Perform necessary safety testing of electrical equipment and keeps required records;

+ Perform pole work;

+ May diagnose failures and repair drilling and patching to facilitate installations;

+ May assist in high voltage work.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

+ Installs open and concealed wiring and lighting fixtures;

+ Maintains and repairs unit heaters, fans, building maintenance machines and equipment, gas pumps, refrigeration units, diesel electric generators, movable bridges, fire alarm systems, etc.;

+ Rewires motors;

+ Bends pipes;

+ Installs, repairs and maintains oil burners;

+ Performs necessary safety testing of electrical equipment and keeps required records;

+ Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;

+ Keeps necessary records;

+ May diagnose failures and repair drilling and patching to facilitate installations;

+ May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;

+ May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;

+ May operate heavy equipment;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

+ Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard electrical trade practices;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the electrical trade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled electrical trades.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

+ Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

+ At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.

+ At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.

+ Experience performing technical duties within the electrical trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

+ Possession of a current CT E-2 license

+ Experience with generators

+ Availability for on call responsibilities

+ Experience with commercial switch gear and electrical equipment.

+ Experience with electrical panels.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

+ University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut electrical license.

+ Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.

+ A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

+ Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.

+ The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
