Lead Phlebotomy Trainer

Ideal candidate will be someone with experience in education, a teaching background and/or as an instructor at one of the Community College Phlebotomy Certificate programs.
Work Schedule: Day shift but will need to work other shifts based on training needs.
Work Location: Onsite at Main Campus in the Medical Center but will work at area locations based on training needs.

Develops phlebotomy training materials, oversees trainer activities, and collaborates with Nursing Education and
other departments to standardize specimen collection processes.
*Supervises Phlebotomy Trainers*
• Ensures all personnel are trained.
• Ensures competency assessments are completed according to guidelines.
• Coaches and counsels and writes performance evaluations for assigned employees.
• Assists with staffing and scheduling for all training events.
*Collaborates with Nursing Education, Community College Phlebotomy Programs, and hospital department which collect laboratory specimens*
• Collaborates with the Diagnostic Laboratory Managers and Lead Phlebotomists to coordinate all training needs for employees.
• Coordinates the annual completion of all competences for department employees.
• Coordinates and assists with specimen collection training activities for all hospital employees requiring venipuncture skill training.
• Collaborates with the local Community College Phlebotomy Certificate programs to provide clinical training opportunities for select students in conjunction with the hospital Clinical Health Education Program department.
• Identifies potential candidates for the Phlebotomy Extern and Phlebotomy Apprentice programs.
• Coordinates interviews for Phlebotomy Extern candidates with HR Recruitment.
*Performs, supervises, and trains phlebotomy procedures in a competent manner.*
Demonstrates competency, supervises, and trains staff and students in the following phlebotomy procedures:
o Venipuncture
o Arterial Puncture - Inpatient
o Blood Culture Collection for Bottles or Isolator Tubes
o Isolation Room Procedures
o Age Specific Skills
• Completes assignment without undue reliance on others.
• Achieves productivity standard of the section.
• Assists with problem solving.
• Attends continuing educational programs
*Adheres to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols*
• Performs all phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the section's procedure manual.
• Accurately identifies patient and collects the correct specimens.
• Maintains specimen integrity by collecting and transporting specimens in a timely manner.
• Completes records (electronic and paper) and files as appropriate.
• Assists co-workers as required.
*Coordinates the training of staff and students.*
• Interviews and evaluates students seeking admission to clinical rotation in the Diagnostic Center.
• Provides training and teaching assistance to students.
• Attends academic meetings with college affiliates.
• Communicates student achievements with college affiliates.
• Trains new hires
• Assures annual competency assessments are completed for all staff.
• Trains Medical Technology students and Research staff in phlebotomy procedures.
Required: Bachelor's Degree. 7 years Phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory or blood center to include three years of lead or training experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one-to-one basis. CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation. CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification from one of the following: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) OR DPT-ASCP - Donor Phlebotomy Technician from one of the following: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) American Certification Agency (ACA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Preferred: Teaching background and/or as an instructor at one of the Community College Phlebotomy Certificate programs.
This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening. The ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of such infrastructure is a condition of hire and continued employment.
