Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION :This position is duty-stationed on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Guam averages 86 degrees (F) year-round with a multitude of outdoor, cultural and commercial activities. Field work will occur primarily on military lands on Guam administered by Naval Facilities Engineering Command Marianas. Office work will occur in the CEMML leased office in Asan area of Central Guam.

Position Summary

A full-time appointment for a qualified Little Fire Ant Control ( LFA ) Technician II position is available with CEMML and duty-stationed on Guam in compliance with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Mariana Islands Training and Testing Biological Opinion of 2015 and the Navy-funded Project Statement of Work that implements regional biosecurity measures to prevent introduction and promote control and management of invasive species.

The LFA Technician will take part in field work, assist in staff training, coordinate day-to-day field operations, and provide quality control of assigned tasks. Working as part of a team, the LFA Technician II will be responsible for:

+ On-site directing and assisting the other technicians with assigned tasks such as vegetation clearing, transect cutting, ant population delineations, and chemical control of invasive little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) on military lands.

+ Operating and ensuring the maintenance of gas and battery powered tools, including bushcutters, chainsaws, and hedgers, with the assistance of team members.

+ Ensuring that the team has all field gear and equipment prepared for the field day, and all electronics and GPS units are charged and loaded with data appropriate for the day’s tasks.

+ Recording and entering field data, collection and entering spatial data from GPS units.

There will likely be opportunities to assist with other ecological tasks, including surveys for endangered species.

The Little Fire Ant Control Technician II will be expected to carry out tasks in a safe, conscientious manner with an emphasis on workplace safety, the proper use of pesticides, tools, and biosecurity. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of field technicians directed by the LFA Task Leader and supervised by the project Entomologist.

Required Job Qualifications

+ Must have a minimum of a high school diploma, GED , or equivalent.

+ Minimum of one (1) year of professional post-graduate work experience with landscaping, agriculture, pest-control, or natural resources. Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.

+ Minimum of one (1) year work experience conducting invasive insect management utilizing chemical, cultural, biological, and/or mechanical control techniques.

+ Must have experience conducting fieldwork and accurately recording, entering, and proofing data.

+ Demonstrated proficiency using field data collection applications, compasses, maps, data tablets, and GPS units.

+ Must have experience operating and maintaining power tools and field equipment in varied environmental conditions.

+ Must be able to deploy from Guam to locations in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands ( CNMI ), sometimes on short notice.

+ Must be capable of walking several consecutive miles carrying gear of up to 35 pounds and performing manual labor in a hot tropical environment, often under windy/rainy conditions and on uneven terrain.

+ Must be able to take photographs and collect samples of plants, insects, and animals for identification.

Preferred Job Qualifications

+ B.S. degree in biology, zoology, ecology, wildlife sciences, botany, agriculture, or a closely related science.

+ More than two (2) years of professional post-graduate work experience with natural or agricultural resources.

+ Two (2) or more years work experience implementing methods for chemical control of little fire ants or other insect species.

+ Experience with biological monitoring of Federally Threatened and Endangered Species.

+ Familiarity with mixing and applying pesticides, as well as maintaining pesticide application records and adhering to safety protocols.

+ Chainsaw certification/experience, such as S212 – Wildland fire chainsaws.

+ Experience collecting, interpreting and reporting geospatial natural resources data; including utilizing GIS applications and map interpretation.

+ Possession of or ability to obtain a Guam CORE pest control applicator’s license, or equivalent from qualifications from other States.

+ Familiarity with DOD /Navy environmental and safety regulations.

+ Experience working on a military installation and interacting with military staff.

+ Experience working in Micronesia, Hawaii, or other island environments in the biological, natural resources, or agricultural fields.

+ Implement field sampling program under direction of LFA Task Lead Biologist and CEMML Supervisory Entomologist.

+ Assist LFA Task Lead in coordinating day-to-day activities of the LFA team and provide quality control of assigned tasks.

+ Conduct a variety of invasive species monitoring and operational management activities.

+ Vegetation clearing, transect cutting and trail maintenance within jungle areas.

+ Operates tools and equipment commonly used in ecological resource management, which may include but is not limited to, hand tools, weed and brush-cutters, radios, smartphone applications, global navigation satellite system ( GNSS ) receivers, and 4×4 trucks.

+ Follow Standard Operating Procedures for the control of little fire ants including surveys, site preparation and pesticide application.

+ Ensure the team is equipped with proper PPE during use of power tools. Follow all CSU , CEMML and military installation environmental and safety protocols.

+ Inputs data into the computer database both manually and through daily uploads of field data collected on computer data tablets and smart phone applications.

+ Responsible for maintenance of proper pesticide PPE , safe and accurate pesticide mixing, handling, storage and record keeping.

+ Responsible for care and maintenance of field equipment, power tools and pesticide application equipment. Maintains accountability for field supplies and equipment.

+ Cleans, sorts and labels target and non-target ant specimens by collection locale, date and survey type.
