The City is seeking a qualified and experienced Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our team in supporting the maintenance and operation of municipal buildings and facilities. The successful candidate will possess at least three years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of complex mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, and boiler systems. This position requires demonstrated proficiency in the installation and calibration of pneumatic and electronic control systems, the ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and energy efficiency. A valid Class C California driver’s license and a Universal Technician Certification in Refrigerant Transition and Recovery, as required by the U.S. EPA, are mandatory. Preference may be given to candidates who possess a Certificate of Completion in mechanical-electrical technology from an accredited college or university. Additional consideration may also be extended to applicants with demonstrated experience working in a public sector or institutional facilities environment, as well as those with prior responsibility for overseeing contractors, managing preventive maintenance programs, or maintaining computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Familiarity with applicable local building, electrical, and plumbing codes will be considered an asset.

DEFINITION: Under the general direction of the Maintenance Superintendent, installs, maintains, and repairs heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, electronic control and pneumatic systems; performs maintenance and repair on electrical, plumbing, and high and low pressure boilers; and performs a variety of tasks required to improve, maintain and repair City buildings and facilities.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions: Install, operate, repair, and develop preventative maintenance programs for heating, electronic controls, air conditioning, ventilating, pneumatic, refrigeration systems, water heaters/boilers, chillers, cooling towers, controllers, direct digital controls, and fire and security systems; inspect and test equipment and systems as to operating efficiency; read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings; maintain and repair plumbing, electrical and high and low pressure boiler systems; install, calibrate, and maintain pneumatic, electrical and electronic controls; recommend changes to improve efficiency, economy and to conserve energy; and use welding equipment to repair or fabricate equipment as needed. Marginal Functions: Perform duties and responsibilities of the Senior Facilities Maintenance Worker as needed; oversee work of contract and subordinate personnel; prepare bid request documentation and management of bidding process; and perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Certificate of Completion of coursework in mechanical-electrical technology from an accredited college or university desired. Experience: Three years, full-time, journey level experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems such as heating, lighting, air conditioning, power, refrigeration, ventilation, boilers and similar systems.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: A valid Class "C" California driver's license; and possession and maintenance of a Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification as a Universal Technician as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Travel from site to site; exposure to confined spaces; work while elevated on platforms or ladders; exposure to low and medium voltages, hydraulic, pneumatic and chemical systems; osure to confined spaces; work while elevated on platforms or ladders; exposure to low and medium voltages, hydraulic, pneumasome exposure to dust and noise; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Ability to wear and use SCBA units as regulated by Cal/OSHA.
An applicant who qualifies for veterans’ preference and successfully places on an eligibility list for initial entrance into employment with the city shall be advanced one rank on the final eligibility list. Where there are five (5) or less qualified applicants, no veterans’ preference shall apply and all applicants shall be placed on the certification list forwarded to the departments for hiring consideration. The exercise of veterans’ preference shall be exhausted upon appointment to a regular position from an eligibility list.
