NURSING SUPERVISOR (8E Adult Surgical Telemetry/7W Adult Bone Marrow Transplant- located in C.S. Mott Children's Hospital)
Job Summary
8E is an acute care unit that cares for Adult Surgical patients- Endocrine surgery and benign Gynecologic surgery and Gynecologic Oncology patients. 7W is an acute care unit that cares for adult medicine bone marrow patients and medicine hematology patients, including blood cancers- leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, blood diseases- aplastic anemia, immune and genetic diseases.
All nurses on this unit receive required, hospital based training, competency check off for chemotherapy administration, bone marrow transplant administration, and EKG interpretation training. We have telemetry capability to provide the highest possible level of care for our patient population. The University of Michigan Health is a Magnet recognized hospital.
The 7W/8E Nurse Supervisor responsibilities include:
To assist the department manager in planning, coordinating and managing clinical and administrative operations.
To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research.
To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health System mission and goal statements.
To assist in managing budgets, payroll, commodities, staffing/scheduling, hiring and staff reviews.
The Clinical Nursing Supervisor will participate in new program development and implementation; plan, organize and evaluate patient care standards guidelines and educational activities; and monitor and implement the continuous quality improvement programs.
This position reports directly to the CND.
24/7 Accountability for the unit.

Responsibilities*
Personnel Management:
+ Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
+ Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
+ Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline and evaluation of unit staff.
+ Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
+ Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff and physicians.
+ Coach and mentor charge nurses, staff nurses and members of the leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.
Clinical Practice:
+ Schedule flexibility will be necessary, including evening and night shifts, to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching, support, and evaluation of staff on all shifts.
Management of Clinical Area:
+ Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
+ Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
+ Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services and urgent and emergent care.
+ Interpret and implement the hospital and university policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
+ Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures.
+ Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
+ Coordinate performance evaluation activities of unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
+ Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conduct personnel interviews and reference checks.
+ Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.
+ Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedures and standards of nursing care.
+ Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
Quality Assurance and Research:
+ Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
+ Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
+ Promote staff involvement in clinical research as applicable.

+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Administrators, Nurse Managers, Physicians, Peers, Subordinates, and other UMHS departments and groups.
+ Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively
+ Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases.

Required Qualifications*
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Required Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR Master's degree in NursingMinimum four (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse
Minimum two (2) years of recent acute care RN experience
Experience as a nurse leader (Charge Nurse, Team Leader, other management/ supervisory experience, or advancement in the Professional Development Framework) NOTE: Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.
