    This position represents one of eight Bridge Inspector positions, whose responsibility is to lead bridge safety inspections and other structural inspections for nearly 1500 bridges, 1800 overhead signs, 900 retaining walls and 130 miles of noise walls throughout the Metropolitan District.

    Job Duties: Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:

    + Lead and conduct bridge safety inspections, special assessments/inspections of bridges and culverts, deck surveys, and approach panel inspections so structural integrity is maintained at the lowest safety risk and inconvenience to the public, to identify maintenance needs, and to meet federal regulations.

    + Document and input inspection data into the Structure Information Management System (SIMS) database.

    + Lead and conduct routine annual safety inspections of in-service bridges and other highway structures that may include sign structures high-mast light poles, towers and traffic control signals on bridges to ensure their integrity and safety according to MnDOT and FHWA standards.

    + Assist with scheduling and planning of bridge and non-bridge structural asset inspection.

    + Report discovered findings, critical or hazardous deficiencies in accordance with MnDOT policy.

    + Complete and submit paperwork/reports to higher level staff for review.

    + Maintain bridge records and files sufficient to meet state and federal regulations for Bridge maintenance and for programming replacements and rehabilitation.

    + Assist in the performance of fracture critical inspections so structural integrity can be maintained at the lowest safety risk and inconvenience to the public.

    + Perform snow & ice duties such as maintaining roadways and preparing & inspecting winter equipment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Specialist level can be achieved with:

    + Four years of experience performing bridge safety inspections, bridge maintenance, bridge construction and/or bridge design activities or related activities or related activities.

    OR

    + Three years of experience performing bridge safety inspections, bridge maintenance, bridge construction and/or bridge design activities or related activities and a combination of one year of experience performing roadway construction, pre-design, hydraulics/water resources, materials, permits, planning, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, right of way, signs, snow/ice, soils, surveys, and/or traffic engineering activities or related activities may substitute for one year performing bridge safety inspections, bridge maintenance, bridge construction and/or bridge design or related activities.

    + Educational Substitution: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

    + Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

    Licensure and Certifications:

    + Level 2 Bridge Inspection Certification - Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader

    + Valid Class D Driver's License AND a Class A CDL Permit with no airbrake restriction AND a tanker endorsement.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Class A CDL with no airbrake restriction AND a tanker endorsement

    + Experience working with various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word, and Excel

    Physical Requirements

    Field Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work outside in all seasons and exposed to the weather (both hot and cold). The employee must be able to perform all physical actions necessary to inspect bridges and structures including working at considerable heights with access obtained by lift equipment, scaffolds, or climbing. The employee must traverse slopes and wade streams. Performance of the duties of this position requires frequent or constant rotation through body positions including standing, twisting, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, reaching, firm gripping and grasping. The employee will work in high volume traffic zones in day and night conditions and must utilize personal protective equipment appropriate to the activity being performed. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to drive to remote bridge locations and must be able to move safely about a bridge site, project or highway work zone.

    Additional Requirements

    NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).

     

    The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
