Description
The History Department at Stony Brook University seeks an Assistant Professor of Modern Continental Europe in the World, post-1800 (excluding Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, in which we have strong representation). Preferred candidates will attend to Europe's connections and interactions with and impact upon other regions, especially Africa, the Middle East, and/or Asia, and the global community. We particularly encourage scholars with interests in transnational, multiethnic, or borderlands histories and critical imperial studies to apply. The selected candidate will contribute to the History graduate program’s thematic clusters, and will have the ability to teach survey courses, more specialized seminars as well as graduate courses, on various topics related to Modern Europe’s often ponderous interventions attempting to craft world orders far beyond their borders. The incumbent will also have opportunities for affiliation and collaboration with interdisciplinary Stony Brook programs, institutes and centers aligned with their interest, such as The Humanities Institute of Stony Brook (HISB); Center for Changing Systems of Power; and The Institute for Globalization Studies.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in History, or a related field from an accredited institution. The selected candidate should have their degree in hand by July 1, 2026. Expertise in relevant languages and archival research experience in relevant regions.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience focusing on Europe's connections and interactions with and impact upon other regions, especially Africa, the Middle East, and/or Asia, and the global community. Ability to teach undergraduate surveys and seminars as well as graduate courses.

Only references of shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to provide a research statement and teaching statement with sample syllabus, and possibly other materials.
The Department expects to conduct remote interviews with shortlisted candidates and then host finalists on campus in early 2026.
