ABOUT SAN LUIS VALLEY RESEARCH CENTER : The Colorado State University potato program is based at the San Luis Valley Research Center which is engaged in various potato research programs including breeding and selection, pathology, crop management and field physiology, postharvest physiology, and seed certification.
Faculty located at the SLVRC are members of an academic department at Colorado State University and report to the respective department head.

LOCATION : The San Luis Valley Research Center ( SLVRC ) is located in Center, Colorado, 9 miles north of Monte Vista, in the San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley is unique in that it is one of the largest, high altitude (7,600 ft.), irrigated crop production areas in the United States. The area is surrounded by 12,000-14,000 foot mountains.

Position Summary
This position provides general labor and research farm support for the San Luis Valley Research Center. Responsibilities include: Research field maintenance (i.e., planting, irrigation, weed and pest control, general research plot upkeep), experimental crop planning and harvesting, and general maintenance and repair of the facilities, grounds and equipment.
Position Minimum Qualifications
• This is an entry-level position for individuals with less than 2 years of professional experience. High School Diploma or GED .
• Employees must provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and prove their authorization to work.
• Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other heavy machinery such as small engines, rototiller/weed eater or the ability to learn.
• Demonstrated communication skills and ability to understand both verbal and written instructions (English).
• Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include some heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.) and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling.
• Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization.
• Ability to accommodate Flexible Work Arrangements ( FWA ) and to meet seasonal demands as well as varied work hours extending in night and/or weekend.
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with or without direct supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience welding, general mechanic work and general facility maintenance.
• Experience working with large-scale irrigation systems.
• Experience in a research or compliance oriented environment.
• Working knowledge of agriculture crops relevant to the SLV .
• Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• Pesticide applicator’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
