Description of Work Unit
The CSU Equine Reproduction Program has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory.

Position Summary
Hiring 4 interns for 7-month Equine Breeding Farm Internship positions at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory ( ERL ).
The Equine Reproduction Laboratory, Colorado State University, is accepting applications for an Equine Breeding Farm Internship that will begin on Friday, January 9, 2026, and conclude Friday, July 31, 2026. The goal of the program is to provide on-the-job training in equine breeding farm procedures and management. The program is aimed preferentially for people with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry. Interns will participate in a breeding season internship program. Interns will rotate through 4 shifts of service areas, including a defined rotational schedule of 1) Stallion Service, 2) Mare Service, 3) Weekend/Overnight duty, and 4) Overnight duty. A limited defined amount of on-call duty will be expected, as well. Applicants should have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or related discipline. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. at time of application; CSU will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. This is a non-degree program. A certificate of achievement will be provided upon successful completion of the program. Job placement assistance will be available upon request. A salary will be provided, and housing is available on site for 2 Interns on a lottery basis; Other successful Intern candidates must find their own housing in Fort Collins or local vicinity. Rent is required for the on-site housing.
Training may include:
Stallion
stallion handling, stallion management, semen collection, preparation of cooled-transported semen, semen evaluation, semen freezing, stallion laboratory cleaning protocols
Mare
Hormone therapy, reproductive management of mares, artificial insemination, embryo transfer management, restraint for farrier work, reproductive management of mares, care of the pregnant mare, overnight foal watch, care of the newborn foal, dystocia management, herd health management, lab and equipment cleaning protocols; use of autoclave, restraining mare for reproductive procedures, such as oocyte pickup, embryo transfer techniques.
*Night and weekend shifts will be required.

Position Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or related discipline. Applicants must have at least 5 years of experience being around and handling horses. Applicants must be comfortable around horses and have knowledge of basic horse behavior. Must have a good attitude and work ethic. Must be able to work in a team setting as well as independently. This is a physically demanding job and you must be able to lift at least 50lbs (feed bag, hay, foal, etc) Applicants must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of application; the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an equine breeding farm setting, experience handling stallions, mares and foals and/or experience giving IV, IM and oral medications would be beneficial.

Duty/Responsibility
Equine Breeding Farm Interns will provide assistance in the Stallion Service and the Mare Service; duties will include, but are not limited to horse handling, electronic and manual record keeping, administration of medications, routine medical care, restraining for farrier, grooming, blanketing and turn out of horses. Interns will assist veterinarians in examination of mares, stallions, and foals, semen collection and evaluation, insemination of mares, hormone therapy, therapeutics transfer of embryos and restraining for reproductive procedures. Interns will monitor late-term pregnant mares for impending foaling, notify the on-call veterinarian, and provide assistance during foaling, as needed. Interns will assist with the medical care of stallions, mares and foals and trailering to the JFEH , if needed. Interns will assist with general laboratory functions, including, but not limited to cleaning of lab and stock areas, stocking, equipment cleaning, autoclaving, laundry, power washing and reception, etc. Interns will provide assistance to undergraduate and veterinary students on rotations at the ERL or enrolled in courses with laboratory sessions at the ERL .

Interns will provide assistance with routine care of horses including administration of vaccines, dewormer and other medications, grooming and horse maintenance, provision of special feeds and medications, check horses in or out after normal hours, perform evening rounds to monitor horses living on-site and shut gates, stall doors, barn doors, etc.
