REPORTS TO: Food and Beverage Manager
Position Summary: The Coat Check Attendant is an essential Guest Services team member interacting with guests of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). This highly visible position provides courteous and efficient service to guests of the symphony hall by managing the receipt, storage, and return of coats, bags, umbrellas, and other personal items. Coat Check Attendants report to the Food and Beverage Manager and work closely with the House Manager. As one of the first points of contact for guests, this role plays an important part and helps to set the tone for a warm, welcoming, professional, and organized symphony experience.
This position operates in a formal, fast-paced performing arts venue where attentiveness and grace under pressure are essential. Interactions are primarily with guests, many of whom are longstanding supporters of the symphony, so a professional and guest-focused attitude is key.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Guest Services:
+ Provide exceptional service for all guests, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
+ Represent the SLSO organization to a wide cross-section of the St. Louis community.
+ Make reasonable attempts to resolve guest complaints and concerns or displays of unusual or disruptive behavior.
Front of House Services:
+ Report at scheduled time, dressed in standard SLSO attire, and possessing recommended ushering equipment.
+ Complete pre-concert activities as outlined in the SLSO Guest Services Guide operating procedures, including clocking in, picking up the Function Sheet, and attending the House Manager’s pre-concert meeting.
+ Perform concert-duty activities as outlined in the SLSO Guest Services Guide operating procedures, including preparing hangers and claim checks.
+ Remain at assigned post during the performance.
+ Fulfill role in emergency response situations as outlined in SLSO emergency procedures. Perform post-concert activities as outlined in the SLSO Guest Services Guide operating procedures, including checking for left guest items and then clocking out when released by the House Manager.
+ Report any accessibility issues or guest concerns to the Front of House Manager or House Manager
+ Report ill or injured guests to a SLSO staff member with a radio
Position Requirements:
• Minimum 2 years of guest service, retail, or other experience working with the public and/or large groups.
• Regular availability on Friday/Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons (occasional weekday night shifts may be available).
• Daytime availability for approximately 15 weekday concerts during the season is a plus.
• Passion for delivering exceptional guest service with a proven ability to exceed expectations.
• Friendly, approachable demeanor with strong communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple items quickly and accurately.
• Appreciation of live performance and enthusiasm for creating a positive experience for guests.
• Ability to resolve conflicts calmly and professionally while enforcing SLSO policies.
• Participation in SLSO’s Guest Experience and emergency response training programs.
• Completed background check.
• Ability to utilize scheduling software and adhere to SLSO scheduling policies.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift light to moderate items (e.g., heavy coats, garment bags).
• High level of dependability and access to reliable transportation.
