    Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia. Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the Victim Witness Assistance Unit that is responsible for providing assistance and services to victims and witnesses using established program standards. Interviewing and providing support to victims and witnesses and providing training to management, staff to assure compliance with federal laws and policy concerning federal crime victims; developing and implementing specific program activities to ensure compliance with federal victim laws and Departmental guidelines. Typical work assignments will include: Coordinating with Department personnel, federal, state and local law enforcement and victim service providers in providing victims with the services required by federal law. Provides in-court support during and prior to hearing and trials for victims and witnesses. Develops and distributes information regarding new programs and services for victims of federal crime. Speaking to public, civic, industry and special interest groups about victim issues to publicize federal efforts to develop and improve programs for victims, and efforts to promote interest and support at the local level. Designing brochures and other outreach material to create, or improve, services to victims of local and federal crime. Serving as District representative on local, state and national task forces, committees and working groups regarding victim issues. Developing a network with federal, state and local victim service providers to increase resources and services to better serve federal crime victims. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify as a GS-12, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience is defined as having knowledge of the guidelines, policies, and rights and services of victims and witnesses and is demonstrated by the following duties: developing and providing training, information and resources regarding victim issues to attorney's, support staff and external agencies; interviewing and assessing victims and witnesses to assess needs and provide social service referrals as necessary; communicating with victims pertaining to the criminal justice process and any victim inquiries and concerns; advocates on behalf of crime victims with federal, state and local agencies, and creditors; coordinating travel/lodging for witnesses; providing in-court support for victims during and prior to hearings and trials. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
