    Job Summary

    The Senior Nursing Director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) serves as the strategic and operational leader of nursing services within the Level IV NICU. The senior nursing director is responsible for developing and maintaining an environment that promotes excellence in patient care, advances evidence-based neonatal nursing practice, supports nursing professional development, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. This role works closely with nursing leaders, physician directors, maternal-infant care teams, executive leadership, and support services to deliver the highest quality of care to the critically ill neonates and their families.

    Responsibilities*

    + Provide visionary and strategic direction for the NICU nursing staff and leadership team.

    + Oversee day-to-day operations, resource allocation, and delivery of family-centered care.

    + Ensures all practices comply with hospital, state, and federal regulations, The Joint Commission and Magnet standards.

    + Promote best practices in neonatal care through policies, protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.

    + Foster an environment of patient safety, actively managing and mitigating risks.

    + Recruit, mentor, and evaluate nurse leaders and staff within the NICU.

    + Champion professional development, education and training opportunities.

    + Manage budgets, staffing models, and resource allocation to meet patient care needs efficiently.

    + Build effective partnerships with physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary health professionals, and administrative leaders.

    + Develop and maintain strong programs for patient-and family-centered care, including support services and advocacy.

    + Lead continuous quality improvement initiatives and data-driven care innovations within the unit.

    + Participate in and support clinical research activities relevant to neonatal care.

    + Interpret and act upon outcome metrics to consistently enhance the patient/family experience and clinical results.

    + Maintain compliance with all licensing and accreditation standards for NICU care.

    + Support and maintain BASE goals and mission for the Health System.

    Reporting Relationship:

    + Administratively accountable to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

    + Works collaboratively with nursing leaders and administrative managers.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

    + Required Educational Requirement:

    + Master's degree in nursing or health care administration, public health, business or related field (a juris doctor degree may be considered).

    + If master's degree is not in nursing, a bachelor's degree in nursing is required.

    + Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible nursing experience overseeing work processes.

    + Three (3) or more years of demonstrated competence and leadership in a nursing management role are necessary.

    + Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).     Desired Qualifications*

    + Previous experience (greater than 2 years in the last 5 years) in a level III or IV NICU.

    + Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary leadership team.

    + Demonstrated leadership abilities, self-confidence, and assertiveness in a variety of contexts.

    + Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    + Demonstrated ability to communicate expectations, to lead by actions as well as words, to build consensus and to share credit for success.

    + Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse, multi-disciplinary groups.

    + Demonstrated strong analytical and critical thinking skills, knowledge of basic accounting principles and budgetary practices.

    + Strong inpatient nursing experience.

    + Demonstrated understanding of regulatory/safety in a clinical setting.

    + Creativity and a high level of energy.

    + Broad human resources, financial, and program management experience.

    + Proficiency with the system applications used in University of Michigan Health (UMH) Michigan Medicine, such as MI Chart, OneStaff, and Wolverine Access.

    + Experience in LEAN techniques, operations improvement, marketing, and/or strategic planning.

    + Knowledge of UMH policies and procedures.

     

    Work Schedule

    Hours: 40 hours/week; FLSA Status: Exempt

    Shift: Hours and Days to be determined upon hire. Requires flexibility to unit needs

    Background Screening
