Summary:

Performs cardiovascular procedures, including, but not limited to, echocardiograms (transthoracic, transesophageal, exercise stress, Dobutamine stress, pediatric) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) studies.

Responsibilities:

1. Examines patient’s requisition form to obtain vital information needed prior to testing (room number, patient number, STAT, preop, etc.), and responds accordingly. Verifies the existence of an appropriate history and/or examination data in preparation for procedure.

2. Checks patient’s chart to verify order and accurately transcribes necessary information from the patient’s chart (BP, medications, ordering physician), ensuring that contraindicating conditions are identified and communicated to the physician prior to initiation of the procedure.

3. Accurately implements diagnostic tests/procedures in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, and techniques. Performs testing in response to patient needs, physician direction/orders, and within the limits of established UNC Nash policies, procedures, and patient-driven protocols.

4. Effectively researches and resolves cardiovascular testing problems and routinely provides input into the establishment of departmental policy/procedures. Routinely discusses unusual or difficult testing experiences with peers and team members to improve cardiology testing.

5. Ensures that necessary consent forms are signed. Patiently and clearly addresses patients’ questions and concerns and ensures a prompt, accurate, and appropriate response, or consults physician if unable to satisfactorily address. Ensures that patients’ concerns and wishes regarding their own diagnostic tests are considered and communicated to attending physician.

Education Requirements:

• Associate’s degree in Sonography or completion of a twelve-month ultrasound program from an accredited institution

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

• Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and a Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVT) or by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) and a Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS)

• BLS certification

Professional Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of three years’ experience as a sonographer and competent in all procedures performed
