This posting is for a Transportation Worker III position, located within the Division 2 - Pitt County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible road maintenance tasks, in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. The position is required to operate a variety of highway construction and highway maintenance equipment. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities of used materials, performing manual labor tasks and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work also involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. The employee in this position will be expected to work in all types of weather conditions. Workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor for road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties as required. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management prefers applicants with the following:

+ Working Knowledge of Standard Road Maintenance and Construction Procedures.

+ Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.

+ Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew

+ Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.

+ Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Additional Expectations:

The ability to be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety Toe shoes will be needed.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation if needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements
