Stony Brook University: Health Sciences: School of Dental Medicine: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Description
Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and Stony Brook University Hospital are in the initial stages of launching an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program and are seeking a self-motivated, forward thinking, academically-oriented and experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon to serve as its inaugural program director.
Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) is Long Island’s premier academic medical center. With 624 beds, SBUH serves as the region’s only tertiary care center and Level 1 Trauma Center, and is home to the Stony Brook Heart Institute, Stony Brook Cancer Center, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. It supports 68 medical residencies and fellowships accredited by ACGME, including otolaryngology and an integrated plastic surgery residency.
The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) is the only dental school on Long Island, caring for patients from Brooklyn to the East end of Suffolk County – 80,000 patient visits per year. It supports CODA accredited residency programs in dental anesthesiology, endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. This mix of dental specialists, in one location, provides the optimal clinical and intellectual environment for the interdisciplinary planning and treatment of complex oral and maxillofacial surgery patients, resulting in more predictable outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The hospital-based facility for the program is integrated with other surgical disciplines in SBUH’s ambulatory surgery center. This will ensure convenient access for patients, facilitate the interdisciplinary care of patients and provide clinic visibility among all in the hospital. The inaugural program director will have the opportunity to develop operational protocols for the service and collaborative partnerships with SBUH.
Individuals applying for this position should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that develops strong and supportive relationships with faculty, staff, students and residents, and promotes collegiality. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.
Responsibilities:
+ Planning, implementing and coordinating the OMFS curriculum, resident selection, supervision and performance evaluation in compliance with CODA standards
+ Collaborate with residency program directors in the SDM and the School of Medicine in developing, evaluating and updating an OMFS residency curriculum
+ Provide supervision of residents in outpatient and inpatient settings of SBUH
+ Oversee the scheduling of OMFS residents on off-service rotations
+ Recruit, oversee and evaluate clinical and administrative support staff of the clinic
+ Participate in on-call assignments of faculty and OMFS residents for the department in the SBUH Emergency Department
+ Participate in the SDM’s affiliated dental faculty practice at SBUH and/or SDM by providing the full scope of OMFS procedures
+ Fulfill all educational requirements within SDM and SBUH in order to maintain privileges
+ Assume committee appointments in the SDM and SBUH as appropriate for the position
+ Contribute to the advancement of the specialty through scholarly endeavors
