Description of Work Unit

Our department serves a large and diverse undergraduate program with a Sociology major and three concentrations: General Sociology, Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Environmental Sociology. The Criminology and Criminal Justice concentration—our largest—was recently redesigned to center critical criminology and justice, reflecting the engaged research and teaching of our faculty. We also offer graduate programs leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology. Graduate students work closely with faculty in areas including Environment and Natural Resources; Food, Agriculture, and Development; Crime, Law, and Deviance; and Social Inequality, Social Justice, and Governance. Our faculty are actively involved in the Criminal Justice and Victimization Institute ( CJVI ), an interdisciplinary, community-engaged research initiative housed in the department: https://sociology.colostate.edu/cjvi/ . The standard teaching load is a 2:2 over the academic year with opportunities to teach across undergraduate and graduate programs. Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, which is about 65 miles north of Denver. Fort Collins is a growing community and is home to approximately 170,000 people. The city sits at the northern end of Colorado’s Front Range. The view west of campus is of the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern view is of the high plains. Position Summary

Assistant Professor of Sociology with an expertise in Criminology, tenure track, nine-month position beginning August 16, 2026. Competitive salary for an entry-level position. The Department offers undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology. The successful candidate must be able to contribute across these program levels. All faculty members are expected to teach two courses a semester, develop a program of research and publication, be engaged in the graduate program, and be active in service.

Required Job Qualifications

+ Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related social science disciplines by August 16, 2026, with an active research and teaching agenda related to criminology.

Preferred Job Qualifications

+ The Department seeks an individual who can teach a combination of core criminology and criminal justice courses.

+ The candidate should demonstrate an ability and willingness to teach courses across the criminology concentration, focusing on the criminal justice system and critical criminology.

+ Preference will be given to those who utilize sociological approaches to understand crime, deviance, and social control.

+ All faculty members are expected to teach two courses a semester, develop a program of research and publication, be engaged in the graduate program, and be active in service.

+ Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate an ability to contribute to research, teaching, and advising in other department areas of strength which include: (1) Environment and Natural Resources, (2) Food, Agriculture, and Development, and (3) Social Inequality, Social Justice, and Governance.

+ We look for candidates who can work effectively and collegially with all faculty and in an interdisciplinary university setting.
