Responsibilities*

Perform the duties of an ophthalmic technician, Perform the duties of an ophthalmic technician, including, but not limited to:

+ Provide exceptional patient care

+ Provide assistance to ophthalmologists

+ Perform testing related to diagnostic evaluation of the visual system

+ Assist in in-office procedures and treatments

+ Actively monitor clinic workflow

+ Assist in training and coordinating the work of other ophthalmic team members

+ Assist in onboarding new employees

+ Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.

+ Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extraocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including special tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, and dry eye testing.

+ Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master and Lenstar).

+ Perform refractometry.

+ Assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office. ? Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physicians.

+ Assist with fitting contact lenses and instruct patients in care and insertion of lenses.

+ Conduct inventory of ophthalmic supplies, including pharmaceuticals and instruments on a regular basis.

+ Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment.

+ Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing. Inspect instruments periodically for damage, send for repair, and request a replacement, as necessary.

+ Maintain monthly equipment logs. Check expiration date inventory, media, etc.

+ Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers.

+ Follow all safety and compliance procedures as per guidelines.

Required Qualifications*

+ Graduation from high school

+ Experience as an ophthalmic technician (at least 2 years, at least COA or equivalent)

+ Commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the research volunteer

+ Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

+ Uncompromising integrity

+ Capacity and willingness to learn new skills as the positional needs change

+ Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

+ Experience with computer keyboards and applicable software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook or equivalent)

Senior Level

+ Minimum of 10 years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.

+ Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required.

+ Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and medical terminology is desirable.

+ This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Intermediate Level

+ 5 years' experience as an Ophthalmic Technician

+ Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology

+ Respectful and compassionate attitude

+ Able to maintain confidentiality and follow all guidelines for documentation.

+ Collaborative and collegial, demonstrates integrity

+ Organized, able to maintain and coordinate multiple items.

+ Excellent computer skills; proficient in data entry, analysis, graphing, Microsoft Office

+ Familiarity with electronic equipment.

Associate Level

+ Successful completion of Michigan Medicine's 12-week training program is required or some experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.

+ Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required within one year of employment.

+ Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and medical terminology is desirable.

+ This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
