    Job Summary

    The Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan is seeking a Laboratory and Classroom Services Chemical Dispensing and Demonstrations Coordinator to support our laboratory courses. This position is onsite in Ann Arbor, MI, Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, to support our Chemistry laboratory course operations.

    Responsibilities*

    + Coordinate the chemical needs for all chemistry laboratory courses.

    + Prepare all solutions and unknowns for chemistry courses.

    + Collaborate with the ChemStands team to ensure a safe and effective learning environment for students and instructors.

    + Safely develop and perform demonstrations for chemistry lectures as requested by the faculty.

    + Collaborate with the department's waste handlers to ensure proper management and disposal of laboratory waste. Participate in meaningful feedback discussions with faculty, lab instructors, and others to make necessary modifications to the delivery of classroom instruction.

    + Oversee inventory, ordering, and routine operations of the chemical dispensing area; assist the manager in maintaining proper inventory levels.

    + Train and functionally supervise student workers as needed.

    + Promote safe work habits from all lab participants (students, staff, etc.). Assist Environmental Health and Safety staff and course instructors with the safe clean-up and disposal of chemical spills in the labs.

    + Assist in responding to student injury/chemical exposures during lab times.

    + Assist with preparing for departmental laboratory outreach programs throughout the year, examples include Science Olympiad, Michigan Math and Science Scholars, WISE/GISE, etc.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related science field.

    + 3+ years in research and/or instructional laboratory setting, with some level of supervisory experience.

    + Functional knowledge of various types of equipment, instruments, and techniques used in chemistry laboratory activities. Including, but not limited to, solution preparation, chemical storage and safety, and analytical testing.

    + Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff, with a strong commitment to customer service.

    + Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks effectively.

    + Extensive experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and comfortable with general office and data management tools.

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.

    + Ability to work in a fast-paced and complex environment, both independently and as part of a team, is needed.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Previous experience working in an academic environment.

    + Previous experience performing chemical demonstrations for lecture courses.

    + Strong understanding of LSA and University policies and procedures.

    + Working knowledge of shared computing environments.

    + Experience managing inventory and ordering.

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Additional Information

     

    The target salary range for this position is $42,500 - $53,000. Please note a higher salary may be offered for highly qualified candidates.

     

    This is a full-time position. This position is in-person.
