Job Summary and Qualifications
Position Summary
The Senior Principal Data Architect role is responsible for providing organization-level and cross-functional technical leadership across all facets of data modeling, data infrastructure, and data platform design and implementation. This role will perform wide-scale technical feasibility, process oversight, and impact analysis to make recommendations for data infrastructure, storage solutions, and data platforms.
This role will provide leadership and technical mentorship to foster a collaborative and effective working relationship between business partners, analysts, developers, and other teams within the organization. The incumbent may be assigned to evaluate and secure direct staff or contractors and develop work-breakdown structures, assign tasks, and provide support and technical oversight to the development managers. The incumbent must also keep appraised of, review, and take part in organizational technology strategic initiatives and take responsibility to align their projects to those initiatives.
The role requires the incumbent to possess excellent communication, proposal, and presentation skills to inform senior management and development staff of status and direction. This role requires initiative to develop good working relationships with other teams, leaders, subject-matter experts, and business partners in the enterprise is fundamental to the success of the candidate in this role.
Major Responsibilities:
• Promote a collaborative team environment and work closely with colleagues to achieve business objectives.
• Collaborate with stakeholders (business stakeholders, product owners, project managers, and end users) to understand functional and non-functional data requirements.
• Lead investigations and solution proposals to data architecture and design problems.
• Ensure alignment to related organization technical strategic initiatives.
• Guide team members in scope of work estimation and forecasting.
• Be a community leader on architecture, design, implementation, and security standards and best practices for a specific domain in data architecture and engineering.
• Perform proof-of-concept or proof-of-technology tasks to get buy-in from cohorts and stakeholders.
• Prepare and present designs, feasibility, and impact analysis of solutions to a variety of audiences from senior management to analysts and developers.
• Manage any assigned staff or evaluate and secure direct staff or contractors and develop work-breakdown structures, assign tasks, and provide support and technical oversight to the development managers.
• Produce sufficient architectural and design documentation necessary to properly guide development teams; items may include: logical and physical data models, data flow diagrams, entity-relationship models, data lineage diagrams, and data platform architecture diagrams.
• Formulate data quality rules and validation tests and conduct data pipeline performance and load testing where appropriate.
• Adhere to and influence established data governance and engineering practices and processes.
• Practice and adhere to the "Code of Conduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement."
• Develop good working relationships with other teams, leaders, subject-matter experts, and business partners in the enterprise.
• Train and mentor peers and other staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field required
• 15+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or database development roles required
• Business related degrees or certificates Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Behaviors Required:

• Extensive experience designing and implementing solutions across the data ecosystem, demonstrating deep expertise in a combination of the following:
• Data Modeling & Database Design: Mastery of relational design principles (normalization, integrity) and schema design for both operational (OLTP) and analytical (OLAP) workloads. Experience with dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schemas).
• Database Technologies: In-depth knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, CosmosDB, MongoDB), including advanced strategies for indexing, partitioning, and performance tuning.
• Data Platforms & Warehousing: Experience with modern cloud data warehouses and lakehouse platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Databricks, Google BigQuery).
• Data Integration & Engineering: Expertise in designing and building scalable batch (ETL/ELT) and real-time data pipelines using tools like Azure Data Factory, GCP Dataflow, and custom solutions.
• Data Streaming & Messaging: Strong understanding of event-driven architectures, message queues, and streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, GCP PubSub) for real-time data ingestion and processing.
• Distributed Data & Advanced Concepts: Deep knowledge of distributed data design principles, data replication strategies, eventual consistency, caching patterns, and data governance concerns in a large-scale enterprise environment.
• Experience interfacing with or working within CRM, ERP, eCommerce, or EMR/EHR solutions and common integration patterns.
• Experience with DevOps/DataOps tooling (e.g., GitHub, Azure DevOps) and CI/CD for data pipelines.
• Experience with data modeling and diagramming tools (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart).
• Strong experience in cloud-native data solutions, deploying within cloud environments, and leveraging serverless and/or container-based data services.
• Strong understanding of data governance principles, including data quality, data lineage, and Master Data Management (MDM).
• Strong understanding of agile methodology and its application to data projects.
• Experience with formal project management (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure).
• Experience supporting business case development, budgeting, contracting, and negotiation.
• Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, product management, and other functions involved in the product lifecycle.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
• Ability to lead community events with a focus on data architecture or engineering.
• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
• Troubleshooting skills including experience with utilities for performance tuning, query plan analysis, and data pipeline monitoring.
• Ability to work independently and lead a team to specific outcomes.
• Strong ability to understand context for data models, data flows, and their relation to business objectives.
• Understanding of IT contracting and purchasing practices.
• Ability to lead technical interviews of potential candidates of varying levels.
• Ability to sit for long periods of time.
