Position 60023765 and 60023796 will be hired off this posting. You will only need to apply once to be considered for both.
This is an Engineering Technician II position located in the Andrews District Office. This position will serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects. Project Inspectors are required to review NPDES paperwork and complete project documentation such as daily diaries, sample cards, asphalt reports, concrete reports, pay record books, materials received forms and monthly estimates. Project Inspectors also monitor and inspect erosion control and traffic control devices, test concrete, perform densities (conventional & nuclear), take materials samples and inspect asphalt. Position may assist with reviews of driveway permits, Right of Way encroachments, Secondary Road Additions, Secondary Road Abandonments, assist in preparing technical letters and reports, may attend planning meetings, and may provide DOT comments to commercial developers. Project Inspectors take field measurements and perform a wide range of calculations and computations to determine contract pay quantities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.
+ Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.
+ Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.
+ Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
+ Experience generating detailed project documentation and construction quantity estimates using computer/ipad entry.
Additional Expectations:
Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications. Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routine or simple technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized manner. Supervise, assist, and train lower-level employees. Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. Night and weekend work assignments are possible. Snow and Ice operations and emergency response are required. Ability to effectively communicate with the public, local officials, and contractors both orally and in writing.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
