Position Summary
Under the direction of the school leader, the Special Education Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning for students with disabilities across a variety of educational settings. This role is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that offers specialized instruction, enabling students to benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other supports.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive learning environment.
+ Employ instructional strategies and techniques to improve sensory, perceptual, motor, language, cognitive, and memory development.
+ Instruct students in academic subjects using diverse techniques (phonetics, multi-sensory learning, repetition) to meet varying needs and interests.
+ Teach socially acceptable behavior as outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) within a positive behavioral support system.
+ Modify the general education curriculum using appropriate instructional techniques and technologies.
+ Develop accommodations that ensure access to the general education curriculum.
+ Provide differentiated instruction tailored to student needs.
+ Maintain and submit annual review logs and eligibility logs in a timely manner to the Special Education Curriculum Specialist.
+ Collect and monitor data for Students with Disabilities (SWD) eligibility reports.
+ Complete SWD progress monitoring and adhere to system guidelines when SWD enter a facility.
+ Plan and conduct balanced instructional programs including demonstrations, guided practice, and inquiry-based learning.
+ Establish and enforce rules for behavior to maintain a safe, productive learning environment.
+ Meet with parents to review student progress and set priorities for individualized educational needs.
+ Collaborate with parents, administrators, and professionals to develop IEPs supporting academic and social/emotional growth.
+ Maintain accurate, complete student records per law, policy, and regulations.
+ Establish and communicate clear instructional objectives.
+ Develop plans for effective communication and monitoring of students in inclusive classroom settings.
+ Provide crisis intervention and classroom behavior support when needed.
+ Collect data to guide classroom interventions and instructional planning.
+ Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team when appropriate.
+ Prepare data for local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
+ Maintain professional competence by engaging in staff development, curriculum meetings, and professional growth activities.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Required Education:
+ Bachelor’s degree in an approved education program (general curriculum or special education major).
Preferred Experience:
+ Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible special education experience.
+ Successful classroom teaching experience in special education.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
+ Knowledge of instructional theory and positive behavioral supports for students with disabilities.
+ Familiarity with Georgia DJJ Teaching and Learning techniques.
+ Understanding of human behavior, learning, motivation, and developmental differences.
+ Knowledge of behavioral and affective disorders, assessments, and interventions.
+ Ability to implement federal, state, and local mandates governing special education services.
+ Skill in observation, data collection, and reporting on student learning and behaviors.
+ Strong collaboration skills with administrators, colleagues, parents, and community members.
+ Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English.
Certifications
+ Must hold or be eligible for a Georgia Clear Renewable Teaching Certificate.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
+ Work is performed in a school environment within a secure facility.
