    Description

    The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor faculty position in experimental nuclear physics. Applicants from all areas of experimental nuclear & particle physics are encouraged to apply. The particular focus of the research will be up to the faculty member engaging in independently funded research characterized by creativity and vision. The ideal candidate will have an interest in joining and strengthening the long-term vision of the Stony Brook group towards the realization of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).

     

    The appointed faculty will join Stony Brook’s experimental nuclear physics group and the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science, contributing to a vibrant and expanding research program. The group is at the forefront of investigations into strongly interacting QCD matter, hadron formation, and precision tests of the standard Model of Physics. Faculty study the quark-gluon plasma and its transition to hadronic matter, probe how protons emerge from quarks and gluons, and test the Standard Model through high-precision measurements with polarized beams.

     

    Stony Brook is a leading group in developing the EIC science, and advanced instrumentation and simulations for the EIC detector (ePIC). The group plays a leading role in the sPHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), in MOLLER, collaborations at Jefferson Lab, MUSE at PSI, DarkLight at TRIUMF and IceCube experiment at the South Pole. The group works closely with Stony Brook’s Center for Nuclear Theory (CNT) and the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), and has strong connections with experimental and theory groups at BNL.

     

    The person holding this position will report to the Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department. During the academic year the faculty member may be asked to give seminars on the member’s work and is expected to present their research at national and/or international conferences. The faculty member will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and will be expected to encourage, and as appropriate, participate in, the research and mentorship of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The faculty member will participate in departmental, university and professional service.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD in experimental Nuclear or Particle physics or a related field.

    • Demonstrated ability to perform research independently and as part of a group.

    • Potential to organize and lead within a Nuclear or High Energy Physics experiment.

    • Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations at major conferences.

    • Expert knowledge of techniques of experimental nuclear or particle physics, and physics data analysis.

    • Clear and concise oral and written communication and interpersonal and analytical skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Post PhD work experience on a Nuclear or High Energy Physics experiment.

    • Expert knowledge of techniques of nuclear and particle physics.

    • Previous experience on current high energy nuclear or particle physics experiments and possibly involved in EIC studies and at least one detector initiative

    • Previous mentoring and teaching experience

    • Experience with experiment operation design and construction
