    Position Summary

    The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) aims to improve residents’ quality of life through bettering public spaces and infrastructure, and through providing excellent public services. With a focus on multi-modal connectivity, thriving green spaces, meaningful capital improvements, universal accessibility, and collaborative public and private partnerships, DPW builds and maintains public infrastructure and park land; manages solid waste collection; and keeps the City’s entire vehicle fleet rolling. One of the largest city agencies, “Team DPW” commits itself to effective efficient customer service for residents and visitors to Indianapolis. The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.

     

    The Program Manager Green Infrastructure is responsible for overseeing the strategic management and maintenance of all natural public assets within the City, including public trees, native spaces, and stormwater green infrastructure. This includes developing and maintaining a strategic plan to manage the natural assets to increase the City's resiliency to extreme weather events, reduce heat islands and improve the quality of life of the City's residents. This position will coordinate closely with various City departments, including DPW Operations, DPW Engineering, and the Department of Metropolitan Development. In addition, this position will collaborate with non-profit organizations with shared objectives to maximize the collective impact on the City.

    Position Responsibilities

    + Manage and provide strategic guidance to the Land Stewardship and Urban Forestry Teams, including budget management.

    + Create and maintain a strategic plan for management of natural public assets and constructed green infrastructure.

    + Oversee the strategic land acquisition and stewardship program to identify high quality natural areas for conservation and degraded areas where restoration would be beneficial.

    + Collaborate with other City agencies to ensure regulations and ordinance are not prohibiting other agencies or private developers from implementing green infrastructure solutions on their property.

    + Educate City-County Council members, other city agencies, and other stakeholders on the importance of green infrastructure and its corresponding resiliency and quality of life benefits.

    + Collect, manage, and analyze data related to our natural assets, both for regulatory reporting and also program improvement.

    + Coordinate with the GIS Team to maintain an up-to-date inventory of all green infrastructure assets.

    + Manage large data sets in GIS, INFOR, and Excel.

    + Contribute to department discussions of Stormwater policy, protocols, and standards.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Urban Forestry or related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience. Familiarity with reviewing engineering plans and implementing the department's goals of utilizing green infrastructure and/or preserving existing natural resources is required. Experience managing projects and executing strategic plans is required.

    Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

    A master’s degree in a related field, and/or a professional certification in a related field are preferred. Experience working with public agencies and managing staff is also preferred.
