The purpose of the work unit is to gather, evaluate, and summarize data and observations on terrestrial wildlife and habitat resources. This work unit develops and participates in the implementation of recommendations consistent with CPW’s Strategic Plan and direction provided by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission for the wise stewardship of wildlife populations and habitat in Colorado.
Description of Job
This position serves within CPW’s Northwest Terrestrial Game Management Team as a wildlife technician coordinating and managing data collection for the White River elk and deer survival monitoring areas. This position will make decisions necessary at the operational level to carry out field duties associated with the new elk herd (E-6) and long-term deer herd (D-7) monitoring areas. This position will work as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team with biologists and district wildlife managers to coordinate animal capture operations, collar maintenance, monitoring, collar recovery, data entry, and annual reporting of findings as required by the operational and annual work plans. This position will also work with biologists and staff to provide data and input into wildlife management plans and recommendations and to mitigate any impacts on wildlife and habitats.
Wildlife Management Recommendations
Formulates and presents wildlife management recommendations to CPW staff by collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting biological data. Provides support in the form of data, reports, and comments to other CPW employees. Provides biological expertise through review of internal and external plans, environmental statements, and other decision documents.
Wildlife and Habitat Inventories
Conducts wildlife and habitat inventories to guide local wildlife and habitat management decisions under the direction of other staff and biologists. Collects and analyzes data to compile reports on wildlife abundance, demographics and distribution and/or habitat quantity and quality.
Wildlife Management and Habitat Studies
Conducts or participates in wildlife and habitat management studies to gather biological data by planning studies, capturing, marking, monitoring wildlife populations and habitat, analyzing and interpreting results, completing reports, and delivering presentations.
Wildlife Habitat Management
Work with Area biologists, habitat coordinators, and Area Wildlife Managers to implement habitat management programs and plans.
Wildlife Population Management
Employs computer-based wildlife population models by interpretation and manipulation of data obtained from wildlife inventories, hunter harvest data, other field observations, and research results.
Educate and Inform the Public
Employs computer-based wildlife population models by interpretation and manipulation of data obtained from wildlife inventories, hunter harvest data, other field observations, and research results.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of relevant experience in wildlife biology, wildlife management or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
OR
A combination of related education in wildlife biology, wildlife management and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four(4) years.
You must adequately demonstrate your experience in your application as it relates to the duties of this position. No formal college education is required.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with supervisors, coworkers and the public.
+ Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles, snow machines, ATVs, and UTV.
+ Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
+ Experience with radio telemetry.
+ Experience with GIS (Geographical Information System) programs.
+ Degree in Wildlife Biology, wildlife management or similar field.
Required Competencies
+ Organizational and time management skills
+ Ability to use and operate computers and email
+ Ability for sustained flight time (6 hours with refueling breaks) in helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft on wildlife surveys. These flights may be low-level and involve banked turns.
Conditions of Employment
+ Travel – The employee must be able to work some evenings and weekends as well as occasional overnight travel.
+ This position represents Colorado Parks and Wildlife statewide, which requires periodic travel which equates to 8-10 overnight trips per year and many locations not available through mass transit.
+ Position requires advanced skill levels to operate motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and 4x4 vehicles to access difficult back country areas for programs, trainings, project inspections and evaluations in a safe and efficient manner.
+ Overnight and extended on-day travel throughout the region and state as needed to understand the issues, geography, and variation of impact on site-specific projects.
