• **Project Description:**
Xcel Energy is seeking a highly motivated Reliability Engineering Intern to join our team at the Cherokee power plant in Denver, CO. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity to apply your mechanical or electrical engineering knowledge to real-world challenges, focusing on ensuring the long-term reliability and performance of our critical plant assets.
You'll be an integral part of our Reliability Engineering department, a team dedicated to technical problem-solving and proactively improving equipment health. The program provides practical, hands-on experience and will allow you to take ownership of assignments from start to finish. You'll gain valuable experience reviewing engineering drawings and equipment manuals, walking down the plant, and communicating your findings and plans to leadership. This role is a great fit for a self-starter with a positive attitude who takes pride in delivering high-quality work.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
+ Conduct reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) analysis on plant equipment to identify potential failure modes and recommend mitigation strategies.
+ Assist in the development of preventive and predictive maintenance plans for mechanical or electrical systems.
+ Review engineering drawings, specifications, and vendor manuals to support equipment upgrades or troubleshooting.
+ Support root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for equipment failures and contribute to developing corrective actions.
+ Walk down the plant to inspect equipment condition and collect data for reliability improvement projects.
+ Develop clear and concise reports on project progress, accomplishments, and future plans for leadership.
+ Working Conditions-This position is a hands-on, outdoor role along with office assignments. You'll be working in an industrial environment, exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
+ A positive attitude and willingness to work outside are essential.
This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements
+ Current student, Junior status (as of Fall 2026) or higher.
+ Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
+ Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/part-time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).
+ Able to commute to the Cherokee power plant in Denver, CO.
Preferred Qualifications
+ 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher.
+ Completed two years of undergraduate coursework, including core classes in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, circuit analysis, or power systems.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate findings and plans.
+ Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and work independently on assigned tasks.

Non-Bargaining
The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $22.50 to $30.10 per hour
This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays
