    Position Summary

    The **Sr. Director of U.S. Market Access** is a leadership position responsible for enhancing, executing, and overseeing market access strategies, with a focus on U.S. private payers and related stakeholders (HTAs, utilization management entities, integrated delivery network (IDN)-owned health plans). This individual will build and lead a team to secure coverage and facilitate patient access to Medtronic’s innovative cardiovascular products and therapies by engaging with commercial payers and other external stakeholders and collaborating closely with internal teams. This position will act as a subject matter expert in payer relations, managed care contracting, and market access.

     

    In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment, this position is expected to anticipate and skillfully navigate the multifaceted challenges of commercial payer reimbursement. This pivotal leadership role demands a sophisticated grasp of market dynamics, deep subject matter expertise and experience with payers, and the convergence of clinical advancement with economic value. The individual must demonstrate strategic vision, executive presence, and the ability to foster cross-functional collaboration, all while setting the direction for market access initiatives and shaping commercial payer reimbursement strategies. Important skills include creative thinking and problem-solving, a willingness to take decisive action, and the capacity to influence high-level payer decisions, to rapidly advance the organization’s position in a competitive and ever-changing marketplace.

     

    This role will support multiple cardiovascular businesses in Medtronic, including coronary, renal denervation, peripheral, and vascular therapies.

     

    A Day in the Life

     

    The Sr. Director of U.S. Market Access is responsible for leading a high-performing, geographically diverse team to develop and execute payer/market access strategies across multiple cardiovascular product portfolios.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    Strategy Development and Execution

    + Lead the enhancement, execution, and oversight of comprehensive commercial payer, managed care, and contracting strategies, aligning with business unit objectives and product portfolios.

    + Translate business and product strategies into clear, specific, and actionable plans for payer engagement.

    + Develop tailored, actionable, evidence-based payer strategies at national and regional levels based on therapy/product evidence, market landscape, and stakeholder trends.

    + Monitor and analyze market trends, competitor activities, and regulatory changes to inform payer strategy.

    + Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and company policies in payer and managed care activities. Exercise sound judgment and oversight to maintain the highest standards of integrity and transparency.

    Organizational Leadership and Cross-Functional Collaboration

    + Build and lead a high-functioning, geographically diverse team dedicated to payer strategy and successfully partner with other reimbursement colleagues to develop and execute market access strategies. Ensure a strong organizational structure and effective work distribution.

    + Must be experienced and skilled in partnering with clinical & regulatory functions, legal and compliance partners, and commercial (field sales and marketing) organizations.

    + Manage external relationships and contracts with consultants and service providers. Conduct business reviews, identify growth opportunities, and support new product launches through effective vendor management.

    + Represent the organization in internal and external settings, including payer advisory boards, policy work groups, and professional associations.

    Payer Engagement and Advocacy

    + Lead a team to communicate directly with payers, key stakeholders, and physician groups to advocate for coverage of Medtronic products and therapies.

    + Advocate skillfully for Medtronic therapies with commercial payers.

    + Engage, lead, and support physicians and other influential opinion leaders for payer advocacy, providing content, training, and strategic guidance.

    + Partner with field/commercial colleagues, advocacy organizations, and external consultants to broaden payer engagement.

    Development of Market Access Tools and Infrastructure

    + Oversee and manage the development and maintenance of the infrastructure for data tracking.

    + Oversee the regular production of reports/dashboards tracking group activity and progress.

    + Lead the development of best-in-class resources, tools, and collateral to promote the value proposition for payer messaging and education.

    + Contribute to the development of educational and promotional resources for sales and field reimbursement teams.

    + Regularly assess and communicate coverage developments to internal teams and customers. Prepare and present insights to senior leadership.

    + Leverage advanced analytics and market research to support comprehensive payer and pricing strategies.

     

    Education and Experience Requirements

    Required:

    + Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, health policy, health economics, or a related field required.

    + Minimum 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device industry, with significant exposure to market access, payer relations, and reimbursement roles.

    + Minimum of 5 years in leadership roles managing payer negotiations and strategy.

    + Demonstrated track record of success in developing and executing payer strategies, including product launch experience and deep understanding of U.S. healthcare systems and regulatory environments.

    + Demonstrated expertise in the influencing clinical policies of health plans for medical devices in the hospital and outpatient environments.

    + Strong knowledge of fee-for-service payment systems, coding (HCPCS/CPT, ICD-10), and managed care contracting.

    + Established relationships with key decision-makers at commercial insurers, Medicaid, Medicare, and provider networks.

    Preferred:

    + MBA or master’s degree in healthcare administration, health policy, or related field

    + Market access experience with cardiovascular therapies

    + Market access experience with digital technologies

    + Experience with first-in-class therapies and medical technologies

    + Advanced knowledge of health economic methods (cost-effectiveness, budget impact analysis) and clinical evidence development strategy

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information to executive audiences and external stakeholders.

    + Ability to write business correspondence, internal reports, and payer messaging materials.

    + Presentation skills in front of larger groups or conferences.

    Analytical Skills:

    + Advanced analytical reasoning and ability to interpret data analyses and clinical evidence.

    + Expertise in scenario analysis and economic evaluation of market access strategies

    + Ability to generate ideas, find solutions, and drive collaborative outcomes.

    + Proven project management skills and attention to detail.

    Relationship Management:

    + Strong networking and relationship-building skills with a variety of stakeholder, including payers, physicians, advocacy organizations, and internal stakeholders.

    + Proven ability to collaborate within a matrix environment and influence peers, teams, and management.

    Technical:

    + Expertise and comfort with Microsoft Office applications, including Office 365, Teams, OneDrive (cloud-based collaboration applications), and Salesforce.com

    + Ability to quickly learn new software applications and telecommunications platforms as needed.

    Travel Requirements

    + Expect 25% travel with occasional periods requiring greater travel for meetings, conferences, and payer engagement.

    Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$248,000.00 - $372,000.00

     

    This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

     

    This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.

     

    The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico. Base pay is based on numerous factors and may vary by job-related knowledge, skills, experience, etc. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

     

    The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
