General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a HIGH POWER ENERGY STORAGE APPLICATION ENGINEER to join our High Voltage Science and Capacitors team at our Rancho Bernardo location. This role is ideal for a highly motivated and skilled professional with expertise with supercapacitors, electrostatic capacitors, high power discharge circuits, high voltage, and pulsed-power systems, as well as a demonstrated ability to excel in a dynamic Research and Development (R&D) environment.

The selected candidate will report to the Manager of High Voltage Science and Capacitors and collaborate with a team of highly qualified professionals. Responsibilities include designing, prototyping, testing, and deploying advanced solutions; characterize energy storage materials, components and systems; playing a key role in the integration and support of high-power systems; developing safe and reliable control architectures; and standardizing data collection across experimental test equipment. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the advancement of technologies within GA-EMS’ expanding product portfolio. This candidate ideally has a mix of mechanical and electrical engineering skills that will aid the development of advanced energy storage solutions using supercapacitors and dielectric film capacitors.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Develop architectures, solutions, and test plans for innovative capacitor designs

+ Perform thermal and electrical engineering analyses, circuit (LTSpice or equivalent, MATLAB) and hardware design, introduce test automation, and document test cells

+ Develop, design, and build unique and specialized test hardware to characterize capacitors and supercapacitors

+ Actively participate assembly and testing of capacitor and supercapacitor elements, devices, and arrays, develop code to analyze and interpret data, and record findings

+ Develop large megajoule class energy storage systems using supercapacitors

+ Participate in the design and selection of capacitors (both film and supercapacitor) for external customers

+ Communicate findings to stakeholders and deliver technical presentations and reports

+ Manage technical projects to ensure alignment with schedules, budgets, and organizational goals

+ Develop supercapacitor management systems to enhance performance, diagnose health, and protect integrated systems

+ Engage with customers, systems engineers, and stakeholders to define requirements, ensure compliance, and manage technical efforts

+ Collaborate with manufacturing teams, engineers, and technicians to develop and support production processes

+ Lead internal and external design reviews for systems, subsystems, and components

+ May lead small cross-functional engineering teams on efforts involving high-power electronics, hardware, and system design

+ Apply advanced concepts in electrical, pulsed power, and capacitor engineering to integrate components into complex systems

+ Plan and execute technical efforts efficiently and strategically with general direction and minimal supervision

+ Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on projects as needed

+ Perform other duties as assigned or required
