Job Summary
Position is for a laboratory technician in the laboratory of Dr. Muneesh Tewari in the Department of Internal Medicine. Position is term-limited for 1-2 years, with possibility of extension depending on research funding.
Candidate will assist with multiple human research studies, with possibility of future animal research studies. Responsibilities include pick up/receipt and processing of human biological samples (blood, urine, stool, etc.). Will be responsible for performing basic tests, setting up and operating necessary lab equipment, and knowing how to properly dispose of both chemical and biohazardous waste. Maintain and complete all specimen data entry within multiple databases and generate data summaries.
Some supervision/training of undergraduate students may be required.
Some weekend and/or evening work may be required.

Responsibilities*
+ Able to travel to multiple sample pickup sites across campus and the hospital
+ Perform laboratory bench processing of human research samples
+ Update research sample inventories and sample tracking database
+ Interface with study coordinators from multiple teams and hospital staff
+ May assist in the functional supervision of undergraduates
Required Qualifications*
+ High school diploma or associates degree and 1 year of experience
+ Direct experience at a laboratory bench, either through a prior position or classroom lab experience, including experience using micropipettes and centrifuges.
+ Comfortable working independently in a laboratory setting
+ Must possess good team skills and be able to effectively multi-task.
+ Meticulous attention to detail and strong organization skills
Experience working with standard computer software (email programs, MS Word, MS Excel).
Desired Qualifications*
+ Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or related field.
+ Previous experience working with human biologic samples (blood, urine, stool, saliva)
+ Experience performing bench laboratory work outside of a classroom environment.
+ Mouse handling and husbandry skills

Additional Information
This is a term-limited appointment ending after one year. There is a possibility of extension based on research funding. At the end of the stated term, the appointment will terminate, and you will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
