    Responsibilities*

    A. Patient Care Duties

    1. Observation/Monitoring

    + Assist with admissions, discharges and transfers

    + Obtain and record vital signs including: temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and reports abnormal values to RN

    + Respond to monitor alarms

    + Assist with connecting to monitors and calibration

    + Apply ECG electrodes and pulse ox probe; attach patient to travel monitor

    + Obtain and record height and weight

    + Measure and record intake and output

    + Empty and record outputs from drains, urinary catheter, bedpan, urinal, etc.

    + Label and secure patient belongings including sensory aides and assist devices

    2. Specimen Collection

    + Perform point of care testing; maintain and calibrate equipment and supplies

    + Collect specimens including urine and sputum

    3. Intravenous Lines

    + Prime IV tubing; time and date bag per policy

    + Prime central/pressure set ups (after bag spiked by RN); time and date bag per policy

    + Discontinue peripheral IV

    4. Patient ADLs

    + Provide toileting/bedpan/urinals

    + Accompany, escort, ambulate, move, turn, dangle, lift, attend, hold, position patients

    + Provide patient nourishment by providing snacks/beverages, assist with ordering meals/snacks, feed patients as needed

    + Change gown, bed, linens as needed

    + Assist to undress/dress as needed

    5. Urinary Catheters

    + Perform intermittent and clean urinary catheterizations

    + Connect, drains and disconnect urinary catheters

    + Assemble intermittent and continuous bladder irrigation supplies

    + Discontinue urinary catheters

    + Determine bladder status with bladder scanner

    6. Wound/Skin Care

    + Perform pre-operative skin prep/hair clipping as needed

    + Provide skin care at the direction of the RN

    + Cleanse and redress non-sterile wounds

    + Assist RN with complex dressing changes

    + Care for permanent drain sites and apply appropriate collection device; i.e. ostomy, G-tube, etc

    + Apply binders, ACE wraps, hot and cold applications

    7. Respiratory Care

    + Connect oxygen delivery device and set oxygen flow rate as directed by RN

    + Assist with trach care on stable tracheotomies including cleaning and redressing; assists with tape and tie changes

    + Assist with endotracheal tube care and tape changes

    + Coaches and prompts patient to use incentive spirometer, and coughing/deep breathing

    + Performs routine oral and nasal suctioning

    8. Other Interventions

    + Measure and obtain anti-embolism hose; apply sequential compression devices

    + Perform patient care/comfort, safety rounds

    + Provide family support, escort in/out of unit

    + Assist with application and maintain restraints

    + Function as a messenger

    + Obtain supplies and medications as necessary

    B. Clerical Duties

    + Identify and print on-line documents including H&P, consent, blood consent

    + Make wristbands

    + Print patient labels

    + Answer telephones

    + Order equipment

    + Fax documents

    + Page as requested

    + Label equipment charge slips

    + Temporarily locate patients in computer system

    + Use multiple computer systems

    C. **Environment**

    + Set up patient bays for admission or procedure

    + Maintain orderliness of patient bays, unit including equipment/cords, linen, trash, patient belongings, etc.

    + Clean and maintain inventory and outdates of equipment and supplies in patient care areas

    + Check emergency equipment

    + Make up stretchers for patient admission

    + Obtain, open, and arrange equipment and supplies for specific procedures

    + Stock supplies and equipment in patient care areas

    D. **Transport**

    + Assist with patient transport as needed

    E. Reporting/lunch/breaks

    + Reports to charge nurse at beginning and end of shift, whenever leaving assigned work area, when going on break/lunch or when asked to assist in other areas

    + Available to nursing staff in assigned area and others as needed

    + Lunch and break times are assigned by the charge nurse daily

    Required Qualifications*

    High school diploma, GED or equivalent, ability to read and write, and one of the following:

    + Junior status in an accredited BSN program

    + 2nd year in accredited ADN program

    + Bachelors Degree in Applied Medical Science

    + a minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting

    + a minimum two years experience in in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting in a nursing home or other health care environment

     

    This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Attended and passed CNA course or CNA state certification

    + Recent experience in an acute care inpatient setting

    + Basic computer skills

    + Demontrated communication skills, both written and verbal.

     

    Work Schedule

     

    The work schedule consists of the three 12 hour evening shifts, Monday-Friday. Shifts are 9a-9:30p.

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Union Affiliation

     

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

     

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
