    + Position: Technical Writer – Operator Manual Specialist

     

    Department: Engineering

     

    Reports to: Sr. Director of Engineering

    What you'll do:

    As a Technical Writer - Operator Manual Specialist, you’ll be the voice that helps customers and colleagues alike understand our products. You’ll create and publish clear, accurate operating manuals for both standard and custom portable machining solutions, ensuring users worldwide can get the most from their equipment. You’ll also manage and maintain our document control system so engineering updates and product changes are captured quickly and consistently. By keeping performance information current and compliant with internal and external quality standards, you’ll play a critical role in delivering the precision and reliability Climax is known for.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Interviews production and engineering personnel and reads journals, manuals, reports and other material to become familiar with product technologies and the operation, maintenance and servicing of Climax machine tool offerings.

    + Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, parts list, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples to integrate and graphically communicate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail. Ensures operating processes outlined in manuals are accurate and appropriate.

    + Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to deadlines and sets standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.

    + Selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts to illustrate product components. Creates final layout of illustrations/copy for publication. Creates photographs and videos of machines as needed for proper documentation.

    + Based upon the above processes, publishes industry-leading, innovative product operating manuals which serve as a foundation for other documents that communicate information to customers. This includes operating manuals for one-of-a-kind special machines, new standard machines and updates to existing standard machine manuals.

    + Creates quick reference guides in Adobe InDesign of all the published standard product manuals. Creates a revision control system so that when standard product manuals are updated, so are the quick reference guides.

    + Maintains translation updates for the CE set of languages for standard product manuals. (This does not require knowing languages other than English.)

    + Creates and maintains a world-class document control system within a rapidly changing industrial manufacturing environment.

    + Reviews existing operating manuals and recommends revisions to more clearly and accurately represent the product to our customers.

    + Maintains knowledge of CE technical data file requirements. Creates and maintains CE compliant product operations manuals.

    + Creates and maintains comprehensive and professional technical instructions, documents and drawings for the operation, set-up, test, inspection, and troubleshooting of machine set-up and applications.

    + Interfaces with engineering, sales, marketing, and manufacturing to successfully fulfill the above duties and responsibilities.

    + Attends the weekly new product check-in meeting to keep the entire new product development team updated on critical new product development due dates and deadlines.

    + Handles stress in a professional manner, demonstrates the ability to get along with others, demonstrates successful attendance and punctuality, and works overtime / extra hours as required to meet business needs.

    + May occasionally travel, primarily in the local area.

    + Other duties as required.

    EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

    + Requires an associate’s degree (AA); or four years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience in technical writing, illustration and document control.

    + Experience with Adobe InDesign is required.

    + Fluency in multiple languages beyond English (such as French, German, Italian, and/or Spanish) is a plus.

    + Prior experience using ISO processes and procedures a plus.

    + The ability to set-up and run Climax standard portable machines is preferred.

    + Experience with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD a plus.

    + Knowledge of CE safety and documentation standards is a plus.

    + PC based computer experience is essential, such as with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, MS Project.

    + Operate digital still and video cameras to enhance product documentation for manuals and for customer presentations and/or training material.[LB1]

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Office and travel have moderate noise levels. Machine/Product demonstrations and customer visits can have loud noise levels.

     

    Noise levels may be extreme and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and usage is driven by customer requirements. Other required PPE includes, but is not limited to, steel toe boots, hardhat and safety glasses. Customer working environments can be extreme in regard to height, confined space, physical requirements and hazards.
