Job Description

Work Arrangement:
Onsite:** **This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a GM or supplier facility, as designated by the business, on a full-time basis.
Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location, which may be at various locations throughout the United States depending on business needs. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed. Selected candidates will be notified of their assigned location approximately 90 days prior to start date.
The Team:
The Manufacturing Engineering team at General Motors is seeking curious, driven students to contribute to meaningful work that shapes the future of the automotive industry within our General Assembly and Global Propulsion System teams. We design, build, and install the tools and equipment for vehicles at our global manufacturing facilities.
General Assembly you will be exposed to various positions and assignments in plant and corporate staff locations throughout the United States aimed at cultivating development and to education. Positions in the organization are hands-on and engaging. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and be able to flex your creative muscles.
Within the Global Propulsion Systems team, we deliver products and processes that meet the business requirements of the manufacturing organization while exceeding the expectations of our customers.
Most assignments will be located in Warren, MI, strategic partners around Southeast Michigan, or manufacturing sites across the United States.
What You’ll Do:
As a Manufacturing Engineering intern for General Assembly you will be exposed to various positions and assignments in plant and corporate staff locations throughout the United States aimed at cultivating development and to education. Positions in the organization are hands-on and engaging. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and be able to flex your creative muscles. Examples of General Assembly assignments available include:
Analyze product, process, and technology to craft best methods to assemble vehicles, and protect the manufacturing process
Recommend and validate improvement for existing processes
Support evaluation of innovative technologies to address current manufacturing challenges
Develop tools to improve program/project management
Assist in the design, build, and validation of tools and equipment
Programming of manufacturing technology
Assist maintenance personnel in operation and maintenance of specialized equipment
Troubleshoots special maintenance and equipment problems
Coordinate machinery and equipment upgrade projects
About the Roles & Responsibilities for General Assembly:
Develop processes, equipment, and tools for 50 Assembly, 30+ Stamping, and 30 Propulsion Plants, and approximately 30 launches each year globally
Collaborate with other centers to reduce energy and waste globally
Develop and evaluate manufacturing innovations to support the factory of the future
Responsible for all value-added systems for Vehicle Assembly including lean material strategies
Develop & Validate new Automation for all manufacturing sites
Your project work may include involvement with any of the Global Propulsion Systems components or assemblies currently being manufactured, those being developed for future manufacture, and any of the Machinery & Equipment and/or Manufacturing Processes related to them. This may include activities such as:
Analyzing conditions for making/purchasing components for the best method of manufacturing/assembly/testing
Proposing and/or evaluating manufacturing processes and/or plant layouts for machinery & equipment in assigned area and/or product program
Directing the design, development, analysis, and/or improvement of manufacturing processes for an assigned area or program
Providing technical support to Operations personnel for specific plant machinery & equipment, including specifications, purchase, runoff, installation, debug, PPAP, and ramp-up activities (Launch Execution)
Regular contact with others outside the assigned work group, and/or outside of GM, as required (e.g., work with Suppliers to GM)
Developing and/or designing work process flow and jobs associated with manufacturing processes
Developing or designing machinery & equipment, conveyance, operator or machine tooling, Tool Change procedures, etc.
Preparing and delivering reports on work progress/status and proposals
Gathering, analyzing and reporting on data
Investigating problems and recommending/analyzing possible alternative solutions

Required Qualifications: ** **
Pursuit of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or technology in one of the following areas: Automation, Automotive, Computer/Computer Science/Computer Animation, Construction Management, electrical, Industrial, Information Technology, Kinesiology, Machine Learning, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Software, or equivalent
Must be graduating between December 2026 and June 2028
Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months
Must be willing to work in a plant environment

Knowledge of statistical methods as applied to experimental design and process development
